Mayhem, This is a forum for public opinion, if you cannot take that dont join. I am not trying to play god I'm just voicing my opinion which is what this is for and there is no need for petty insults just because your opinion is not the same as mine. Anyway, back to the point. I still havent heard any good reason why pedestrianisation is a bad idea. By that I dont mean "because I have a car and do not want to walk", I mean benifits for society not an individual.

Anyway please vote on your opinion on whether Irish city centres should be pedestrianised.

Saint it is a little more complicated than that I feel.

The entire city centre should not be no. Certain areas should be yes. Restrictions should not be brought into effect until good alternatives are in place to get people about.
I mean benifits for society not an individual

In this case you cannot really separate the two. What you appear to be thinking of is benefits to society from your perspective.

I agree though, pedestrianisation of certain areas would be welcome, and indeed there are plans for this as a means of regeneration of certain areas, but it will take a little more time.

Fancy meeting you here Jak. I know that things would have to change to allow for pedestrianisation such as pulic transport and commercial aspects.

"In this case you cannot really separate the two. What you appear to be thinking of is benefits to society from your perspective. "

I want to hear opinions from all perspectives not just ones I agree with but they must be serious, not like I said "I have a car and I dont want to walk". These are not reasons.

"I have a car and I dont want to walk". These are not reasons.

They are in some cases valid reasons.

Of course there are some people who may refuse to reduce their travel by car regardless - but for many people their decision and opinion at this moment is based on their perception of alternatives available to them and the implications of such restrictions.

We need to provide 'pull' factors for people to commit to car use reduction and modal choice before using heavy 'push' methods - which i believe large scale pedestrianisation would be.

Oh, that's why the thread gets locked when I voice my opinion?!

Don't get me wrong, I support the idea in principle.
However I take offence at the way you refer to "the public" while pushing across a minority opinion...

    Obviously that was not allowed..

Looh at the poll mayhem, doesnt look like a minority opinion does it?

So the number of people who:

    1) Vistit this forum
    &
    2) bother their arse to vote

    represent the majority of people?
    I don't think so.....

i'm locking this thread aswell becasuse quite frankly i think it is a pointless discussion. And I will expalin why.

I think car free days are a great idea. There should be more of them. People should be enpugrages to use other types of transport rather than ther own car.

One of the problems, as I see it, is we as a nation try to solve these probem first in dublin. The car free day was basically non-existent outside Dublin. the RTS group didn't even bother caliming any street outside of Dulin (becasue of the lack of publicity rather than actyually educating ppl).

But the big problem is the lack of public ransport. Like Bard stated in a previous post, he is 16 miles from the city centre with no decent public transport, how esle is he goona traval. Even with the proposed LUAS and Metro lines there will still not be enough proper pulic trnasport available in Duli city let alone the rest of the county.

So if ppl want to discuss the topic further, feel free, but first give tought to solving the problem rahter than stating we need to do something abot it. We all know that traffic is a major poblem. We don't need eejets to remind us. We need solutions
