Pint glass question

I was having a quiet pint by myself last night and I noticed that on the side of nearly every pint glass there is a circle containing two numbers seperated by a line with the work 'pint' printed over the circle. I asked the barman and he hadn't a clue. Anyone know what the two numbers signify? I would hazard a guess that the lower one is the year the glass was manufactured.

I was asked this before when I was working in a bar... apparently the symbol is a Government quality stamp. As far as I'm aware, you're right that one of the numbers is the year of manufacture. What the other number is, I'm not sure... perhaps it represents where the glass was manufactured.

Remember this from Park Royal in the UK and believe Ireland is similar.

Everytime a manufacturer produces a run of half/pint glasses for commercial use, they have to put forward a set sample for testing by government weights and measures department. The first number is the batch that the glasses came from and the second is the year.

If the samples fail, all glasses in that batch fail and are destroyed. Weights and measures also impose set fines for failed batches.

Its just a system to see that the customer doesnt get fiddled over when getting a pint or a halfpint, all glasses must come with a stamp or the UK equivilant (crown and capacity) is also accepted....
