cd burning in OS X

    (OS X 10.1.5)

OS X seems to have an annoying habit of shaving off 40mb or so from a CDR (after preparing it for burning). This means that a 700mb CDR appears as only having 660mb of free space.

I notice it's trying to create a HFS + ISO 9660 filesystem on the disc before it will write to it, perhaps this overhead is consuming some of the disc space.

Is there any alternative (besides toast) to OS X's built in cd-burning routines?...a command line burner like burncd in freebsd or cdrecord in linux would be great.
