I am wanting to do programming in UL and I have heard you need a science subject to get in? Is this true? And do you need two languages? Cause I am from South Africa and I dont do Irish or french but I do, do german (German is in the physics block, so its either physics or german). BTW. I am in 5 year so its not too late too change:)

Since you are South African you will be exempt from having to do Irish. If you talk with your principal or someone at your school you can get a certificate that you then give to the CAO when you are applying for university.

You do need to have a language other than Irish or English, you have German, that'll do:)

its UL this is not required as ul has no requirement for irish.

I don't believe there is a requirement for a science subject for the course you want so you should be fairly alright but it will say on the ul site. www.ul.ie or in their prospectus

Irish isn't a requirement for any of the NUI's afaik. Some colleges just allow you to use it in place of another european language.

As for subject requirements, the only real one is Hon's Maths in most courses and even that can be bypassed by way of a matriculation exam in most cases.

For comp sys in UL you need:

Leaving Cert (or approved equivalent - realistically any final exams)
with at least grade C3 in two higher level subjects and grade D3 in four ordinary or higher level subjects (including Maths, Irish or another language and English)

Those are the general requirements for UL

In addition Comp sys requires at least a grade B3 in ordinary level maths or grade D3 in higher level maths or an approved equivalent.

This will all be in your CAO booklet when you get it.

Simplest thing is to phone Maria O'Connell (CSIS departmental secretary) in UL - 061-202730. Or admissions.

Obviously if you're only in 5th year you've plenty of time to do this.

This is true, It's part of the Matriculation Requirement, However this requirement is been looked into as my Careers techer infored me she got a letter from a Senator (Can't remeber name) who want to try to remove said requirement mabey as soon as next year so i urge you all to mail you TD's and senetors to express your view.

And on a more personal level i myself have petitioned about my views on this, which is, as a prerequisité i am opposed to it.

    thanks,
    KaPPaR.
