    Hi,
I was hoping someone could explain these errors, which crop up every time I boot and then intermittently, in the system logs.

I'm running XP Pro on 2.2AGhz PIV on an ABIT TH7II with 512 Samsung RAMBUS, Western Digital SE 80GB, Pioneer 106 DVD, and a Liteon 40/12/48/ CDRW.

The error below is most common, occuring at 15 sec(ish). intervals on boot, or HD intensive activities, and then disappearing in 'normal' use.

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Disk
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 11

    Time: 20:34:06
    User: N/A
    Computer: DOUGAL
    Description:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\D.

This error sometimes accompanies the above error, but isn't as frequent.

Anyone got a clue what's going on? Google isn't showing me much love.

Looks like an error with your IDE controller, could be hardware or software related. try get newer drivers for your motherboard, run scandisk and if none of these fix it looks like a hardware problem. not much you could really do with that but get a new one.

you could try another operatins system! 2000 or that.

Ive know a few people that had problems like that with xp pro and gave up and got 2000! Not a great answer i know but something you may have to concider!

Run a search for the two event ID's here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/
and you'll probably find the solution...

    Cheers for the suggestions,

Getting a new MB seems a bit drastic, without actually figuring out what is going on :-)

I've tried the MS site but now real joy.

Don't want to go to to Win2K, since I paid for XP, I'm going to try replacing the IDE cables as maybe they aren't 80 pin?

Is the only thing I can really think of as the problem since the drive seems fine..

    Thanks,
    lph

Ok, since you don't say you have the raid version, its rather strange that you have a problem with the standard intel ide controller. Even if you didn't have the latest driver installed, it still shouldn't be throwing those kind of exceptions.

Can you try a different cable for the drive, or another drive? Check also that you have the drive connected to the end of the 80 pin cable, and not the middle.

    Thanks Gerry,
I'm not using the RAID controllers, when I get a chance I'll check my cable configuration..

Will let youse know how it goes.

    Cheers,

try attaching it to the raid controllers then :) (they don't have to be in raid mode)

install service pack 1 and any updates u can, there is one bug in XP where it throws up the same error at each boot up even if the error only occurred once ages ago, there's a patch to fix that. (doesn't sound like that here tho as it occurs in use).

Update the bios also, www.abit.com.tw will have it.

[edit] have u overclocked the pc at all ? [/edit]

    Cheers,
I ordered the XP Sp1, and if that doesn't fix it I'll review my options.

For anyone (nearly everyone) without the bandwdith you can order Sp1 for free on CD from M$! They keep it quiet but hitting here should sort you out:

    http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windowsxp/servicepacks/sp1.asp

It's really more a problem that is niggling rather than effecting work/gaming :-)... Paid through the nose for the system, not overclocking it, even gentle pushing the ON button.. stability, stability.. have had a nightmare with my last machine.

Incidently, anyone know what the lower-left pin on a power supply cable (looking down on motherboard) does? The one on mine(old machine) seems to have generated enough heat to burn up a little.. if I 'wiggle' the cable I can get the machine to boot but it is really unstable, and liable to fail, cutting power to the onboard fan (its an ABIT KT7A-RAID, running a 1.4 Athlon, un-clocked).

Dont worry about bandwidth for downloading SP1 - M$ has capped the bandwidth per user so my shiny DSL modem still took 2 hours to download the 46megs I needed

    Boo M$

I dont know any other company that gives as much bandwidth as MS.

.........I cant believe I just said something positive about M$
