Apologies to TmB who brought this up in another thread, but I believe it deserves one of its own. I kinda grew up playing text adventures, from Infocom titles through to Level 9, Magnetic Scrolls. Best I played was probably Infocom's Wishbringer or Magnetic Scrolls The Pawn. I always found it amazing how much atmosphere could be created from text on the screen. Infocom's Infidel was another excellent game, however it was extremely difficult.
Anyone else got any fond memories...about adventures obviously

LOL.... OK. Cut & Paste time. :)

I think my favourite of all time is Seabase Delta on the C64. I played that for weeks and really enjoyed it. Puzzles weren't too obscure, but were tricky enough to give you a warm tingly feeling when you solved them.

I also remember enjoying Leather Goddesses of Phobos (but having a built-in hint system kinda dampened it a bit).

I also loved the old Rod Pike adventures (Dracula etc.). When you died, you got a grainy photo-type pic of your corpse depicting how you died (Beheaded, ripped to pieces by dogs, etc.). These games were very graphic, and were marked as 18s long before current day ratings came about. Brilliantly written, too....

One of the worst I've played is Lifeterm (I think thats what it was called). It was fabulously designed in that if you went north, you had to go east to get back to your original location. Genius.

About the only people still making games like this are the Japanese - quite a lot of them are "dating games" (which kind of conjures up the wrong image in most people's minds - for example, you have Kanon, a fantastic game which is basically a really bizarre psychological text-based title, but which gets categorised as a dating game simply because many of the endings end up with you paired up with one of the girls in it....).

That said you also have quite a few which are just great "interactive novel" type games with no "dating" element at all. Sadly, sod all of the really good ones get translated into English, which is a real shame - the only ones that do get translated tend to be hentai games. I guess there's just more of a market for porn than there is for superb storylines and characters, eh...

Are you suggesting that porn doesn't feature superb storylines and characters?

Frankly, no dialog has moved me more than "I'm here to fix the plumbing."

On a certain level, yes. But, really, isn't that the purpose of all the works of man?
