Vegetarians. How do you do it?

    Hallo!

I've considered going veggie for a few years now, but to be honest I'm not sure I could hack it. Have we any vegetarians on boards?

I don't really like vegetables, and while I don't imagine you all sit down to a plate of brocolli and carrots every evening, I find it difficult to picture my mothers dinners as anything but potato, while my father horses into whatever meat I'd no longer eat. So, how do you keep up the variety? And are you tempted to grab a fat burger and stuff it down your throat when you have a few beers?

I can certainly see why people would turn vegetarian, but I certainly couldn't live without things like beef lasagne, spaghetti bolognase, and too many other great dishes to list!

Something I really dislike is thinking about the animals whatever I'm eating came from, which is why I hate meat on the bone, like chicken legs. I don't know how people can chew that, the idea of gnawing on a bone sends a shiver down my spine.

I considered it before myself for a healthier lifetsyle. I did stay off redmeat for 12 months I think. I really love meat on the bone and meat cooked very rare. Blood dripping from a rare steak is just so nice.

I could give a **** about the animals. If you feel guilty about the baby lamb that got whacked over the head with a hammer to make your kebab then you should consider going veggy.

Its good to know where your food comes from and how the thing went from the field to the plate.

It's easy-peasy. You can get premade stuff in supermarkets that look and taste just like meat. The only thing is you may spend more time preparing food then you have before. The handiest thing for most vegetarians is pasta. Cook pasta and garlic bread in 10-15 mins, add a stir-in sauce, cover with parmesan cheese and eat. No veg, and very very tasty. It is lacking in stuff though.

You can get veggie mince and all, and I have made plenty of lasagnes that look and taste just like the real thing. There are enough substitutes out there now to create almost any dish that you had as an omnivore.

IMO, the way to keep yourself going is to use essentially the same stuff, just use different flavourings. Plenty of fast food places have great veggie stuff too, so you won't be left out after a night on the piss :D

If you want to become veggie, then you won't mind the tiny bit of extra though you have to put into eating :)

Yeah I don't see how ye can do it either. My sis is a veggie. I always feel a meal is incomplete if theres no meat!!

Like Seamus says, meat substitues like Quorn and the Linda McCartney range can be a life saver when you're just turning vegie.

Quorn even does a roast which is smashing with some roast potatoes, stuffing, green beans and my excellent vegie gravy! *

    * Offer me cash and I might reveal the recipe...

Just make sure that you get your protein from alternate sources (i.e. not something that once had a face) - Nuts, Grains, Seeds, Tofu, Eggs, Milk, Cheese, Legumes, etc.
There are plenty of resources on the web recommending recipes/food choices - You don't want to live on pre-made veggie food only! (ugh).

Good luck with it, and no sneaking into McDonalds for a BigMac ;)

I used to be a Veggie once,
Had to stop[ for medical reasons.
Vary your diet, Its not just eating vegetables, just make regualr meals only leave out the meat,
Instead of Chicken Stir fry, Addy Pistachio Nuts, they taste lovely and you wont miss the chicken,
Starting off will be terribly difficult, especially if all your mates goto MacDonalds, kinda like mine did, thats when your will power is really tested.
But after that it will get easy,
Get some reciepies off the net, like www.bbc.co.uk/food
Also, Jamie Oliver did a lovely Pasta Salad that is great for Veggies and Vegans.
Believe me, Vegans have a much harder time, atleast you can have milk and eggs :D

tbh, imho, if God/Allah/Ginger didn't want us to eat animals he/she/misc. wouldn't have made them out of food.

I've no problem eating meat, but I don't eat a whole lot of it. I like a good mix, and sometimes a pure non-meat meal can be refreshing, just as after a week of vegatarianism I'd be openly salivating for a nice homemade burger.

btw, do fish count, cos I quite like a good fish dish.

But people are made out of food, why can't I eat people?!

Fish count, but I wouldn't miss fish really. Except for smoked salmon sandwiches with loads of mayonaise.

If you cant deal with that part of killing animals you shouldnt really be eating meat.
