CD price rip-off

    Hey,
Has anyone else noticed the huge discrepancy when it comes to cd prices around town. A prime example is "Gorillaz" album, retailing in Golden Discs in the Ilac Centre for approx. €20 while in the Virgin Sale for €10 - Tom Waits, David Grey cds also.
I was thinking of starting a thread, maybe one of cds wanted - and one of cds spotted with big price differences that people that listen to Phantom's music might be interested in.
    Any thoughts?

the main reason for this is the fact that virgin would have bought a much larger amount of copies of these cd's than golden discs would have so therefore they would already have made their money on them which means they want to get rid of stock so can sell them at cost price or a little above.............

There is obviously going to be a price difference if there is a sale on in one place and not in the other!

But apart from sales, I've noticed the bigger stores like HMV and Virgin sell their new cds for around say EUR22.95(RIPOFF!!) but I've seen the same cds in Golden Discs for EUR20. Just look at any of the new cds and compare. You would think that the smaller stores would be selling them at a higher price. I never go buy anyth from these places now, they are total ripoffs when you can just log into www.cdwow.ie and grab your new cds for EUR13 and get them posted to your house for free!

The biggest ripoff merchants of them all though are bootleg shops like ryhthm records etc... selling boots at EUR22. I've noticed that all the bootleggers must have a little consortium going as most of their cds are set at EUR22 now.

With all due respect ppl, I think you may have meandered from the point somewhat. Perhaps I should have been more specific in my request for feedback.
With reasons for the price differences aside, do you think a thread like this would work?
I know I'd be p'd off if I went to buy a cd one place and found I could have bought it somwhere else for €10 less. I'm not talking 1 or 2 €, I'm talking more substantial differences. It would especially be beneficial for those who aren't in and out of town everyday and wouldn't necessarily spot stuff like that.
    Just a thought.......

i buy the majority of my cds from a stall in the georges street arcade. all albums are priced at 11.50 euro, and they have fantastic records there. everything from lizzy to the grateful dead, from joni mitchell to janis joplin. hmv and virgin are way too over-priced. i would only ever shop there for a cd i couldn't find in a second hand/cheap store (for example i ended up paying 20 quid for madonna's "ray of light" as i couldn't get it anywhere but the large music stores. great record, by the by.)

    janis joplin to joni mitchell
is'nt exactly a bit range is it.

you can pretty much get any of those record anywhere.

personally i hate those prick journalists who sell their promo copies of cds to shops like freebird.

and i'm sorry road records is very expensive

    spindizzy can be good though

    Hi folks

Why not try www.cdwow.ie to purchase your CD's. We have a link to the cite on the left hand side of each page. Just click to go through. Seems to be good value and if anybody has comments about their service please let us know!!

I have certainly noticed a difference in prices between the major outlets, For example, I recently purchased a copy of Royksopp 'Melody AM' at Tower Records where it was €6 cheaper than HMV. Always shop around!

Finally, a word to the wise for people shopping at second hand stores in the Georges St. arcade. Many years ago, I with the help of Gardai at Pearse St. recovered over 20 of my own CDs which had been earlier stolen from my car from a store in the arcade. Be wary!

    check out cdwow: www.cdwow.ie

Heard great things about Royksopp, but haven't actually heard them....

I actually haven't been a stoodent for a few years and buy most of my cds through websites or in the alternative, I have the time being in town every day to shop around. Thankfully, I haven't been stung yet by big price differences.
Simply, I was thinking of those that didn't have a credit card (and thus couldn't use some sites to buy stuff cheap) or who weren't in town all the time.

    www.musicstack.com

This is a huge online resource. If it can be bought, it can be bought here, more or less.

Talking about rip off prices I was in the hmv in grafton st recently and noticed a large rack of the complete stone roses album now they all had import stickers on them(dont ask why the had to import stone roses cd's) the top few row's had the cd's in that anoying inport packaging they sometimes come in and were priced at 35euro the rows below had an import sticker but no wraping 25euro it was the exact same cd and the worst thing is I remember buyind the cd last year in golden disc's for 13.99

You'll get bored of it after 5 listens.

those imports are the pits tho, 35euro for the same cd.. hmv are the worst for that.

cdwow have a pretty woeful selection imo.. cdnow.com is probably the best online music place if you're looking for a hard-to-get album.. musicstack isnt too bad, but isnt really a dedicated shop.
