Dyeing your hair

For the last while I've been thinking about dyeing my hair. A few friends of mine have done it, and sometimes it turns out well, but oftentimes it looks artificial (bottled blonde etc).

Personally I would dye my hair a dark red, I like the colour, and I think it would suit me (feel free to scoff/deride as appropriate :) ). I wonder if many people on boards have done it, and if so what have their experiences been? Does it do any damage to hair?

i bleached my har a couple times. Didn't really notice any damage as such ;)

usually if you do it yourself you can **** it up. Get a professional to do it if ur worried. Be prepared to pay a small fortune tho.

(i plan on getting mine done copper soonish ;) )

Depends on what type of dye... permanent or semi-permanent. If you use permanent dye a lot, eventually your hair will start to get a bit dry unless you use specially made shampoo's/conditioners.

Bleaching... I dunno, never done it but I'd imagine it's worse than dye. Although if you bleach the hair first, then dye it red or whatever, it usually comes out better than dying over your natural colour.

I'd say try a semi-permanet before you jump into the permanent dye, just so you know whether you like it or not.

And feck it, can always wear a hat if it goes wrong :]

i bleached mine for about 8 months... and ended up with dermatitis on my scalp. quite painful. I'd suggest asking eye for advice, and ideas at that

Lol, yeah eye has his hair dyed quite frequently [/understatement of the month]. I don't fancy the idea of dermatitis, but tbh I don't think it would be much of a hassle to dye it myself, and I don't plan on having it for more than a month at a time. I'll just grab one of those dyes in Dunnes Stores methinks.

BTW a lot of the no-nonsense barbers/hairdressers in town don't dye hair. I'd say to get it done in a high street salon would cost a lot. I only see eye at LAN parties though, so I rekon I'll just bite the bullet and get it done myself. It'll be worth it just to see the parents reaction :D

I got drunk last year and when i came home I dyed my hair *having a pharmacy attached to yourn home can be bad sometimes...*

I used a streaking kit on it first and then went to bed, when I woke up I had lil streaks of blonde and black all over my head.. I looked like a bloody tiger!

this was a sunday morning so I decided what the hell, and used some purple hair dye on it, the next morning *a monday.. where I had school* it was orange

with patches of black where I had missed a spot or two..

so I went to school with orange hair for a week or two, that was fun

of course it didn't help matters that that very weekend, I had met my irish teacher in a pub and started calling her a bitch... that was the best month of school EVUR

Anyway...just becare of colours you don't want...namely green and orange...

    They are a true horror...

Sorry to drag this thread further off course swiss but jesus, Mordeth, how come every single story you have begins with "When I was drunk one ( morning/afternoon/evening/night ) I did something really stupid .... "

Back on topic, if its your first time get an experienced person to help you out. This rule works for most things. ;)

    LOL
Mordeth: this one time, when I was drunk, I mooned Beruthiel......

swiss - if you dye your hair a lot it will eventually dry out completely, however a few times shouldn't be too traumatic, but for the first time a hairdresser is a good idea, if it works out well you will be able to do it yourself next time.

I dyed my hair back in 98. I decided to go for the bleached looked, so my and my friend hit Boots, then back to my flat for dye central.

Problem was my hair went lime green, then orange, before eventually going blonde. Parents hated it, friends thought it was mad. I kinda liked it green ;)

LOL Mord, you never told me that one!! :p

Anyway, if dyeing hair doesn't make damage that much, it would be so cool! :D

Three days a go, I had this mascara, I had a Blue one, so I took it and colored some parts of my hair to see what the Blue color looks like on me.. and it looked great!!

I might dye few parts of it Blue when I can :p

Getting it done in a local place could cost up to €150, thats what i was quoted :/ id recommend you get a female friend who knows lots about this sort of thing to do it for you.

Ive bleached and then dyed my hair bright blue twice since july, the bleach stung a bit the second time because it was left in too long but apart from that its grand. If the dye you use isnt very strong you may have to top up the colour every week or two (which is easy, the bleaching is the nasty part). Unless youre a natural blonde youll probably have to bleach before dyeing.

Im very happy with it though, it really stands out and gets me loads and loads of attention :)

Well this one time I was drinking and Beruthiel mooned me :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

Go for it - its relatively simple to do by yourself. If you've dark hair, I strongly recommend bleaching it before you dye it, the colour will be more distinct and will last longer. Bear in mind the colour will fade over time, so while you might fancy having red hair, pink may not be so appealing!

Make sure that when you do it once and do it well.

If you go and do a permenant dye and don't like the results, trying to fix it can really damage your hair.

I'd pay the extra few quid for a good quality dye too.

After all you don't want end up looking like Mordeth do you. (I mean Mordeth witht e dye of course ;))

if you have dark hair,go for red highlights they will look better than a full head tint,Its much more restrained and cooler looking than a full head tint.
Also because red is the least permenent of tints, fading much more quickly than other permenant colours your hair will need constant semi permanent top ups or it will quickly turn copper from the peroxide pre-lightening.
copper highlights dont look to bad on dark hair but full head is just plain wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,875 ✭✭✭Seraphina

i dye my hair regularly(im a natural blonde and i dont like it) and its really not as much hassle as people think. beware of bleach, it does dry your hair up if you do it too much, and can be easily ****ed up. for the love of god follow the instructions properly! other than that, here's some tips

dont buy cheap dye, its cheap for a reason... its $hit

get someone to help you, especially if you have long hair, missing patches at the back isn't fun!

permanant dyes... remember, they're PERMANENT, it might look cool blue, but when half your hair is blue and half is your natural colour you're gonna look stupid. permanantly dying your hair alot also kinda damages it, so just dying it back to your normal colour isn't a good idea. if you are going permanant, try the semi permanant version of the colour to see how it turns out before you go all the way.

the colour recommendations on the side aren't just there for show, if the dye isn't recommended for your hair colour and you go for it anyway, there's a good chance its not gonna turn out right.

watch where you get the stuff, it stains EVERYTHING!

A few months back I bleached my hair blonde and then dyed it blood red on top of that. It looked great and eventually faded to a cool pink colour, but if you are planning anyting drastic, be prepared for people to shout things at you in the street. It's fine in town; nobody looks twice, but in the suburbs it can be very trying. So think carefully about it - I was shouted at by skangers approximately 4 times a day.

When the roots started growing and I was tired of re-dying them, I dyed it pitch black, which it is right now. So much peroxide has made my hair a little stiff, which is actually a good thing, because it makes it easy to stlye (I have very short hair by the way).

If you go to a hairdressers be prepared to pay a fortune, as has been mentioned, and remember that strong dyes fade after a few weeks anyway. If you do a home job, use good dyes, follow the instructions to the letter, and do strand tests and time them to make sure you don't have bad reactions. Also, wear plastic gloves and old clothes and stay away from wood and ceramics that will stain easily. And cover your ears, forehead and neck in Vaseline to protect the skin from staining and irritation. Preferably get a friend to help you.

And generally my opinion is: it's only hair. If you have a disaster, then you can chop it off, or have it fixed with a hairdresser, or re-dye it back to a natural colour, or shave it all off. Hair art is not ever permanent thanks to it's ever-growing qualities. :) Go for it - you can't really do mad things with your hair when you get older so you might aswell enjoy your youth.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, if anything should go wrong then *chop*. ATM my hair is a little short though, so I might have to leave it a week or two. It'll give me time to decide on it anyway. I think I'll do it myself (I am a rather stingy fellow :o) ). It's hardly rocket science, and I do sometimes like change.

    Thanks for the info/advice everyone

I'm thinking of doing a bleach-blonde DIY job on my head. But what should I ask for in the chemist? What brand for instance is recommended? And how much roughly?

Yup if it all goes wrong, do the trusty shave-it-all-off. It'll grow back, eventually ;)

I was thinking of bleaching the tips of my hair(or maybe just pure white for a frosted look) then dying deep red/blue or else bleaching my whole head pure white.

    I've got naturally dark hair.

    Any tips on brands etc.?

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 42,362 Mod ✭✭✭✭Beruthiel

or else bleaching my whole head pure white.

get married syxpak, your hair should turn naturally white within the year

New hairstyle sounds a bit funky though - white tips, never seen that done before

swiss, i think red dyed hair works best with people who have natural dark hair and even then use red highlights. Otherwise the Muppet Show comes to mind.

I once mistook the Daughter in "The Osbournes" for an actual muppet (pink hair, pink fluffy jacket). :)

I dunno there's something not right about men dying their hair......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,518 ✭✭✭krankykitty

I have been dyeing my hair blonde for the past 3 years or so (its naturally very dark brown)
I started off getting highlights in the hairdresser, partly to see if I would like the colour, but having a Mirror/Snotty hairdresser complex (ie dont like sitting looking at myself in mirror for hours on end while hairdresser goes on about how crap hair is etc!) I decided to try myself, first using the boxes of hair dye available in the chemists which worked OK, however I now use the professional hair dye from a hairdressing supplier which works much better and the hair stays in better nick too. You need to buy a tube of the actual colour, and mix it with peroxide, there are different percentage solutions ( I use 12% 40vol on my dark hair, to dye lighter hair may use something different) if youre going to do this I recommend buying a measuring jug and hair dye brush to apply. Part the hair in sections, and apply the mixed up dye and peroxide to the roots first and then the lenghts. Instructions on timing etc is all included in the hair dye itself.
Go by the timings stated exactly, sometimes it will give a range of time ie from 35-45mins, if you are naturally very dark leave it for the longest time stated.

Red is supposed to be one of the hardest colours to do right, so perhaps it might be an idea to get the professional to do first, and then give it a shot yourself.

hope this was of some help

Try some red highlights, they always look well. Get it done professonally though, I advised my little brother to get Herbal essences to dye his dark hair blonde and it went orange.

Well, I just got it done there a couple of hours ago, it's not quite what I wanted or expected, as the colour is a shade more copper than I really would have liked.

It wouldn't annoy me so much, but I actually got it done in Peter Mark, who are a ridiculously expensive stylist. Ah well ya live and learn :).

Again, thanks for the advice, i'll see how it pans out

    LOL

No, I won't be posting pics (yet ;)). It's not really *that* noticeable, since most people don't seem to have spotted it yet. The colour is starting to grow on me (although not that much). Some people are impressed with it, so maybe it's just an overly narcissistic streak that I am displaying.

There's no such thing as permanent dye in primary colours etc red, blue are only temporary and will start to fade within a week, trust me, i had blue hair before and spent a lot on dye to keep it looking vibrant.

oh my god...how did i not see this thread sooner ;)

jez swiss, if you was looking for hair colouring advice all you had to do was ask m8 ;)

a little tip for next time you try get the red done, bleach the hair first, that way the colour takes to the hair better and also is not mixing with your darker hair as the bleach will make it nice and lite, giving you a rich colour nomatter what you go for :D

on a similar topic....anyone got any ideas for my net hair do?? i'm running short on ideas here, in the last 2 +1/2 years, i've been, blue, purple, green, red, red spiked with black tips, black+red split right down the middle, then four colours (red, purple, green and blue) then i had bleached hair and a black smiley done on top with Q3 symbol on the back, did, red at the back+purple on one side on top blue on the other side on top with a line shaved straight down the middle and a second line accross the back to divide the colours, now i did similar to last bu added extra lines and some black ;)
