I am interested to see what the general opinion of Mick's as performance as Ireland manager is. I would like to ban all Roy Keane related comments form this thread and ask that people back up any comments without using Saipan as evidence, if you really think he is a bad manager you should have more than one incidence to back it up. Me personally, every time I start to think he is learning and getting better he does something to call my change of heart into question. The most recent thing was when losing an away match in a qualifying tournament with ten minutes to go, taking off a midfielder for a central defender. To me this is an act of pure muppetry, although I must confess that I never thought I would have issues with Kevin Kilbane being taken off the pitch. Previous issues I have with Mick are playing so defensively away to Yugoslavia and Croatia, immediately after hammering Yugoslavia 2-0 in Lansdowne in one of the best performances by an Ireland team ever seen. Finally, Mick says he wants all his players to be playing first team football for his club. Gary Breen has played 22 minutes of competitive football for his club while O Shea and Phil Babb have played a part in nearly all their club games this season.

Anyway as I was saying, let us try to have one thread where Roy is not the issue.

Ok my reasons Mick is a useless manager, and no mention of Roy.

1.Conceeding a late goal to Macadonia and losing out on a place in Euro 2000

2.Playing Ian Harte at centre Half long before Harte could evn get in the Leeds Team

3.Asking Denis Irwin To "Prove Himself"

4.Been So loyal to Mark Kennedy he doesnt reliease how crap he is.

    5.Ignoring John o Shea

6.Not Putting on Colin Healy or Stephen Reid against Russia even do our midfield was abysmal.

    7.Putting on Phil Babb instead.

8.Starting Kevin Kilbane and Ian Harte in Every Game in the World Cup when the whole world could see they were struggling.

9.Picking Lee Carsley in every Squad.

10.Going to Croatia in the Euro 2000 qualifiers and putting 10 men behind the ball,we lose 1-0

11.Staring Jason mc ateer in the World Cup ahead of Stephen Finnian.

Thats all i can think of for now,im sure there's more, and look not if a mention of Roy:)

well to be far, steven reid was injured. also steve finnan plays rb for his club so saying playing mcateer ahead of him is not really a issue. I do agree that mccarthy seems to make strange decisions. i would like to see and irish team like this given in goal, finnan leftback, o'shea and cunnigham and steve carr (when he returns right back) then duffer on the left, kinsella and mcateer in the centre (mcateer has been playing well in the centre for sunderland) and healy on the right (maybe even move him into the centre drop mcateer and play reid on the left) and robbie keane and morrison or doherty. I always thought morrison should start but after seeing his bad first touch and falling over so many times in the russia match, i am not so sure

    12. Telling Paul McGrath to come out on the town with the lads, even though Paul only wanted a quiet night in at the hotel. Surprise surprise, Paul gets plastered and never plays for Ireland again.

    13. Taking off Kilbane against Holland in Amsterdam (he was playing a blinder, believe it or not) and putting on Staunton. Ireland drop too deep and Holland equalise.

    14. Saying that practising penalties was "rubbish".

    15. His negative speech to the players before the penalties. "We've come far enough, don't worry if you miss, there'll be no recriminations"

    16. Not noticing that Spain had ten men.

    17. Playing one of the best wingers in Europe up front and lobbing long balls up to him.

    18. Not addressing the amateurism within the FAI, despite numerous private requests from certain players. Cheese sandwiches etc.

    19. Giving David Connolly a right bollocking at half time after he scored a first half hat trick against Liechtenstein.

    20. Taking David Connolly off after 20 mins against Andorra. I'm sure that did the players confidence wonders.

    21. For being friends with Cathal Dervan.

McCarthy's not that bad lads. You'd have to blame the players for the Russia defeat - **** defending, no-one pulling the strings, doing the shouting, apart from Robbie Keane who tried a little too hard.
Bringing on Babb was tactical (3 at the back) so that Finnan and Harte could concentrate on attacking - who laid on the ball for Clinton O'Morrison's goal??.
I don't know why he didn't bring on Reid or Healy but he must surely consider his midfield options now. The only reason I can think is that as he's leaving the job after Euro 2004 he has no interest in jeopordising qualification chances by bring in less experienced players. The new manager will have that job.
He ignored Babb after the incident in Dublin but drafted in Kennedy as soon as he was fit - even though Babb was Portugals foreign player of the Year - pure bias from Millwall days
Big Jack success was down to the granparent rule and the influx of english players. McCarthy's success is down to getting the most out of average players by playing a passing game.
Remember 2 seasons ago when United lost 6-3 and 5-2 in successive weeks - people wrote them off but the came back.

    22. For using Ian Evans as assistant manger.

23.For appointing Don Givens in Charge of the a very talented u21 team that loses nearly every match.

Mark my words Micks going unless we win the Euro Championships. Hes done OK but the end is near.
O'Leary will be manager this time next year.

o'leary? he was hated by his players. he would not be the ideal choice. (there was a story about when his autobiography came out, some lads tried to get the players to sign it and they said "**** off i wouldnt put my name beside his")

    Brian kerr all the way

I dont think Brian Kerr would be the rite choice, there's a big difference from managing Young Lads and seasoned Pros.

Eg: Peter Taylor who did a great job with England u21's ,then went to Lecister City who then got relgated, who then Sacked Him.

I'd actually fancy Dave O leary,He's Irish, Available and after all he did take a middle table Leeds team and get them playing great football.

I think Martin O'neill would be brilliant for the team if they could get him

Suppafly: i agree. I'd love it if Martin O'Neill would takes Mick's job when Mick's done but i think he staying at Celtic for now :(

O'leary got a middle table Leeds team, the best crop of youngsters that we have seen in ages AND 100 million pounds to spend on transfers and got them slightly above the middle.

Would there be any chance of getting Martin O'Neill to do the Ireland job as well as managing Celtic, afterall theres only the matches against Rangers that he has to worry about ( and the one or two European matches they have each year )

McCarthy settles for too many draws when we are playing average teams who have done well in the World Cup over 100 years ago and then calling them one of the best teams in the world even though they are no where near us in the world rankings.

    Examples being...
    Holland
    Portugal
    Romania
    Croatia
    Yugoslavia
    Russia

He should be going out to win every game, but he persists on playing down Irelands chances of winning. This could upset the confidence of every single player in the squad.
