Now before you all start, I fully recognise the important role Mick has played in transforming the National team in the time he's had in charge. There was a transitional period - getting rid of the Charltons old guard, and introducing Brian Kerrs youth players to the senior squad. He did that job very well and deserves praise for it.

But now, Mick should take a good look at himself and ask the question, "am I really serving the best interests of Irish football by staying in this job?"

His team selections have been questionable for quite some time now. How can he persist with Kevin Kilbane on the left-wing, when we have arguably the best left-winger in Europe in the squad? Kilbane is an honest player, hard working, does his best for the team........ but those are the minimum requirements for any player pulling on the green shirt. We need ability. Kilbane is very limited in that department.

McCarthy is too loyal to his players, it's great for the players themselves I'm sure, but if it's to the detriment the National team it's the WRONG attitude. Playing experienced players when you need to is one thing, blind loyalty is another.

The situation that needs resolving most urgently is the Keane fiasco. The best central midfield player in the world will play for his country again if Mick stands aside. We all know the story at this stage, both of them were at fault, but what's done is done, it can't be changed. All we can change is what happens from now on.

We would not have conceeded 4 goals with Keane in the team yesterday. No way.

Roy is gonna be injured now until well after the next international fixture. Anything less then maximum points in that home game against the Swiss and McCarthy should walk. We need Roy back as soon as possible. O'Leary could take over. As someone else pointed out in a different thread on this site, he took a bunch of kids at Leeds and had them consistently finishing in the top 5.

The Irish team is in that situation now. O'Shea, Robbie Keane, Duff, Reid, Doherty, Healy, McPhail, Morrison... all 23 or less. Carr, Finnan, Delap & Harte are all 25, Given's only 26. Put Roy back in there with Kenny Cunningham and that's some team.

    It needs to happen.

I agree that Mc carthy needs to get rid of the rigid conservatism in his decision making. of the 11 that started last night`s match 9 of them were on the team that missed the penalties against spain. Kinsella should be demoted to the reserve team with Colin Healy taking his place. Duff should be put on the Left Wing with either Morrisson or Doherty taking his place Centre-Forward. John O`Shea should be Made Centre Half thus ousting Cunningham who played appaulingly last night. I believe that there is no way we can win the European Championship without our best man Roy in the heart of the team as Captain. It was him who got us to the world cup NOT Mick Mc Carthy. I agree with Sidney that if Roy Keane was there last night we could of won.

Maybe he went with the nine players from the Spain game cos they did bloody brilliantly. Why would he drop players who performed in the world cup? Well sayign it afterwards it seems pretty obvious tho. If he changed the team and had still lost people woulda said , 'why didnt he play the team that did so well vs Spain'.

That said he needs to change it around. Cunnigham and Breen looked terrible, poor finnan was half asleep and Kilbane needs to be taught how to cross the ball. The midfield also needs to be told to assert itself, it never had control of the pitch like it should have. If you can't control midfield then your in trouble as we saw last night. The Russians by-passed midfield a lot but when they didn't neither Kinsella or Holland looked like they could stop the Russians.

Yes! Let's sack the manager (and why not the whole squad whilst were at it - they are to blame afterall!). I suggest that we make Roy Keane player manager and promote the under 16s to senior level for him to boss around whilst he personally runs rings around the cream of Europe and wins Euro2004 for 'us'.

I think sacking the manager because of one bad result is a bit of an overreaction. In fact he should be given the entire campaign and if he doesn't get us to Portugal then fair enought get rid of him.

I do try as a person not to jump on any bandwagons, but repeating what I said on this board during the world cup, Keane needs to play.

If not, imo, you can't have Mc Carthy either. I still feel, that Mc Carthy has done superbly for us since 96. Heck he has far surpassed his faith as I saw it when I watched a similarly disastorous match against the same side from the stand in Landsdowne Road.

To be honest, I think it was ironically that match, that laid the foundation for the Mc Carthy and Keane "relationship" as captain and manager.

If you recall, it was this match that Mc Carthy named Keane as his first captain, and Keane was sent off late in the game, after, by his accounts an abismal performance. I think Mc Carthy felt let down from the outset by Keane over this. ( Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I think, and tbh, it makes no difference why stuff happens - the fact remains that life goes on !! )

My point here is that I have, from the outset, leaned towards the side of the Corkman is this soap opera we call the international team. And nothing has changed.

The aformationed match left two things in my head. Keane was wrong to put the jersey on that night, and two, the FAI were wrong to chose Mc Carthy as manager.

The sum up, McCarthy and Keane cop feckin on and deal with the past as the past and get on with life as it is now as professionals. If this doesn't happen, and it remains as is i.e. McCarthy in and Keane out, neither man gets the full respect of all sides. Or for that matter if it were vica versa and Keane was in and McCarthy was out, I would feel the same way. That leaves the only other combination being both parties out, and we're all losers.

My vote's with the win win situ thank you very much !!!
