i'm thinking of changing my surname in a year or 2, but i dont really have a clue of how to go about doing so.
anyone know of any sites that might give me a bit of info on this?
and does anyone know what the story would be with passports/bank accounts etc...? would i be able to carry on using my old ones or would i need to get new ones?

If i may ask why do you want to?Unless you have a last name like Gay or Hitler I hardly see the point.Id never change my name-my dad handed it down to me,his dad gave it to him,and his dad bought the name off a neighbour in exchange for renting a half acre of land for 6 months.

for a start my dad was adopted, so i don't really feel any attatchment to it.
i'll be changing it to my one of my mothers parents names, kidd or payne, which are both a damn site better than my current name

no offence but I wouldn't personally love Kidd or Payne either.

You do it by deed poll, but I'm not sure you you need to talk to solicitor or not. I'm pretty sure it's cheap to do. Just ring a solicitor and ask.

Now a friend of mine, his surname was Hankey, now that is a name that need changing (and was).

Don't suppose you're going to confess to the current one.

No no no, a few people (adults) won a competition last week to change their names for at least 12 months to "turok" and win a massive prize.

Prize? 500 quid. I hope they knew that when they signed up.

AFAIK, you don't HAVE to go to the bother of solicitor/deed poll to change your name. You just start using the new name! I'm not sure how this works out in practice - I'd imagine it could be quite difficult to open bank accounts, get utility connections etc.

Go on, just change your name for the laugh. Change it to something cool like. Max Power (Simpsons)

my pornstar name would be pretty class, prefer not to change my first name tho'

yeah, my dad uses a different name for work, but still has to use his original name for bank accounts & all that stuff.

All this reminds me of the simpsons a few nights were Moe opened up the bar to a trendier clientele and sidelined Homer and the boys.
Homer-Moe this bar isnt you!Yoiuve turned into a complete phoney!
Moe-Hey!Nobody calls Moe Saint Cool a phoney!

Is that legal? I though you couldnt do that.

First of all, you can use any name you like, so long as you arent doing it with the purpose of defrauding anyone. So, if your current name is unsuitable for you, you could walk around calling yerself Manly Man and be perfectly entitled.

However, there are 3 ways to legally change your name.

    1. Deed Poll... Talk to a solicitor about this, its reasonably straight forward. However, please note that at one stage while i was talking to the American Embassy about getting citizenship/green card for the US I was told 'oh we dont like it when people change their names, like what are they hiding?'

    2. Get married... This only works if yer a girl, and you can convince someone with a better surname to marry you.

    3. Usage... Now, like i said, you can use whatever name you want, however, it only becomes *legally* yours after you have been using it for 7 years.

Hope this clears up some stuff

    How so?

Surely a male gay couple could choose...though it would be interesting tow atch the fight. Proper Pay-Per-View material ;)

ahh if only ;) This country of ours is just not ready for such progressive ideas as same sex marriages and affordable internet access...

As yet, it is not possible to get legally married to a person of the same sex... Therefore, it is not possible to legally adopt someones name by marrying them...

I dont know about countries where same sex marriages are ok, mebbe they can both choose which surname they can use... Anyone any ideas on that?
