DVD-R or DVD+R ???

Im looking at getting a DVD writer but I still cannot make up my mind on which is better. DVD-R has been around a while and the media is quite cheap if bought in bulk. DVD+R is a new standard, is faster at writing discs and supports more players. However, the drives are about €200 more in price and the media is still expensive due to the fact it is still quite new.

Anybody got any suggestions or feedback on any of the drives if you own them.

i think it uses multiple lazers, its got loads of new stuff in it,its notting link a conevntional cdr or dvr burner so it should only take 5 or 6 hours in a high end system,i dont think it will be mainstream for like 5 years god knows what we will be using by then

Basically what it comes down to is data storage m8..
I have a dvd writer and a cd writers
Have well over a terabyte on discs
800mb cdr if 3 mins with some of the top end writers..
4.7 gigs in 30 mins with 2x media..
I,d get the dvdwriter.... in that comparision...

    To answer ure orignal question
dvdr- is way way ahead and will be for a long long time
dvdr+ isnt great at the minute with its expensive media and expensive writers and write speeds aint much faster trust Me !!

I think its like the debate between betamex and vhs..
Slowly but surlely dvdr- is slowly amasing its followers..

Oh yes on media prices as above...
    dvdr is 36p
cdr is .9p all sterling prices..
May cost up to 50p depending on supplier and how many etc...

I had to decide about the same thing a while ago,
Basically, DVD+r/rw media is more expensive, the drives are more expensive, and IMHO isnt as good,.
DVD-r Is lurvly and cheap media €0.50, the drives are about €200 OEM, and it only takes 1Hr at 1x to burn the full 4.3GB's

Mac put the A03/04 in the superdrive, what more do u want....

    Why dont you buy an i-mac or e-mac for 1,999 with a dvd-r CDR-RW.
You get a free 10.2/unix cpu with it and it's compatible with most dvd players.
you can get the list here:
    http://www.apple.com/dvd/compatibility/

We have a DVD burner stack here in work which is pretty cool.
You put in a DVD in the DVD reader, and up to 4 DVD-Rs in the DVD writers, and press GO, and it burns them all at the same time :)
We use it to make copies of builds of games for the XBox and PS2... Pretty cool

    €200, do tell.

I've looked at that site and I can't see any DVD-R drive on it for €200.
It must be a fairly old one for that much anyway.

can you copy DVD Movies onto DVD-R Discs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,683 ✭✭✭daveg

I too am looking at buying a DVD writer. Would anyone recommend the NEc drive on Komplett (for €155 AFAIR) which burns DVD-R and DVD+R.
the drives are about €200 OEM,

Indeed please do spill the beans.
can you copy DVD Movies onto DVD-R Discs?

AFAIK and please do correct me if I'm wrong most DVD movies are bigger than the 4.2GB storage on a DVD-R. Therefore you have to rip the film and extra's/menu's and encode using a program like TPMGenc. Then you burn to a DVD-R disc. If you take out extra's you can usually fit the film and sound (5.1/DTS ect - which is very important if you have a good home cinema system) to DVD-R.

Anyone feel I'm incorrect on the above ?

    hehheh linux heretics.

there's also the elusive Sony DRU500A DVD/DVDRW, pricey but relatively format proof
