Hope Im in the right place here-Feel free to move this if Im not.

Just been with the doc this morning and was prescribed ZYBAN to try and stop the dreaded weed. The reason behind it is the fact that Im starting to worry a small bit about my health(Coughing, breathlessness etc)
Ive tried everything in the last year to give up-patches,inhaler,micro tabs, chewing gum, hypnosis and acupuncture. It was actually costing me more to try and stop smoking than it was to smoke. And last year alone I reckon I spent about €2000 trying to give up between all the above.
But with these Zyban its only going to cost me €65 per month to give up under the drug payment scheme(Im spending that in 2 weeks on smokes)
Was wondering about side effects and more importantly does this stuff work??

    DO NOT GO NEAR IT.

My dad was put on these tables to get him off the fags and they nearly killed him. The manic depression he went through after he came off them was unreal. I really mean it DO NOT GO NEAR THEM.

A number of ppl who have taken ZYBAN have commited suicide. This drug is dangourous.

    Seriously????
I didnt know that you suffered manic depression after taking them--All I heard about was insomnia, rashes, dry mouth-the usual. As well some psychosis(Which probably wouldnt be noticable anyway
    :)
Me thinks a talk with the doc is in order.

    Yep I am serious

ZYBAN started its life as an anti depressent and then they found that it helped ppl give up the smokes. So you go and take a anti-depressents for a month or two and then just come off them you will get depressed in my dads case it was very very bad. The doctor had to put him on anti depressents and slowly take him off those, over around 3 months. I know some ppl are fine but there has been a major number of cases like my dad and to be honest after seeing what happened him I would never go near it. Yes it does make you give up the smokes but at the cost of your mental health for a few months afterwards.

I just thought that with all this no-smoking stuff going on Id give everyone the latest on this Zyban stuff.

Approx 9 weeks ago against Kayos advice I started on this Zyban and Im now smoke free for 8 weeks.
I would definately recommend trying this stuff if you can put up with the side effects and get a good GP.As Kayos said they can be quite serious but the GP I had is quite good and monitored me every 2 weeks. The main effects I suffered with were being totally unable to sleep-I mean getting by on 2 hours sleep per night, and also the depression--Big time mood swings.

The GP advised me if I got any of these side effects to cut the dose in half which worked out ok.Im now down to half a tablet per day and have to go to a quarter for the next 2 weeks.Btw you start off on 1 tablet for a week then 2 for 8 weeks then cut down gradually over 2 weeks to finish the course.I was down to one tablet after being on 2 for only 3 weeks due to the side effects.
Ive another 2 weeks to go before the course is finished so hopefully Ill stay off the smokes.
    Richie.
