Oracle 9i release 2 on RH 7.3

Having a few problems... machine is :
1.4ghz intel with 2 gigs of ram and 73 gigs of disk space (well, 2*73 mirrored with 73 hot swap)... 2 gigs assigned to swap, which I thought would be loads for this .. but..

The software installs fine, but on calling dbca to create the first database, it hangs at about 60% ("creating and starting oracle instance") .. I thought maybe I'm being impatient, but it was still there after an hour. I read a bit about the shared memory could be a problem, so I upped kernel.shmmax to 1073741824, and it's pretty much made bugger all difference. I've tried running dbca with different parameters but I'm not having any luck. Anyone have any ideas?

    thanks.

I'll look back over old notes etc if I have time..

Have you tried running top in another shell while running dbca to see if the process is still using system resources or if it is just sleeping?

Also, the last time I installed oracle (8.17) on redhat, I had to change more options apart from shmax, have you checked that you have done everything that was needed to be done as r00t?

Pretty much is using all CPU and RAM, although swap isn't touched at all. Hmm, what were the extra kernel parameters you set?

Well I had to change shmmin and shmseg and a few others but you may not need to change them for 9i. Haven't installed it yet so the installation instructions are probably different.

Took me a while to get 8.1.7i working on solaris, normally it works straight off but it was a lower spec box than normal so I had to use lower values for shmmax and shmmin.

Well, the box is quite a high spec, memory and swap wise :) Anyway, I was going to do the database initialisation manually, but I was really annoyed at this stage, so I thought, 'bugger it, I'll leave it till morning'. Decided to give DBCA one more shot, and it worked, database created in less than two minutes.

*shakes fist at oracle*. Nice DB, shame about the kruddy installers and kludgy management utilities ;)

    Thanks for the help everyone.
