i would probably consider there footballing talents about equal but because of maradonna's drug problem and that farce of a world cup in 1994 he will never be seen in the same light as pele

...and yes that is withstanding that pele now is ridiculed for his errection problem advertisments

Voted for Maradonna, but if Garrincha had of been in it, he would have gotten my vote.

I think it is a very close poll. I've just given it to Maradonna this time. They were from different era's of football and both were immensely skilled.

Garrincha would have been a nice option to have too. He and Maradonna were the only two players to truly win a world cup single handedly.

Maradona was the most skillful player of all time, but Pele was still the better of the 2. His genius, cleverness and reading of the game was better than anyones, PLUS he was a great header of the ball aswell. Maradonna used his skill to get out of problem situations and tackles, Pele didn't get into the problem in the first place, he was always one step ahead - like a chess or snooker player - Pure class.

Neither of them will ever be able to match the grace and skill of the great Lee Carsley.

It has to Be Pele,He won more scored more and was generally a better all round role model, after all how do we know that many of those great matches maradonna played so well in, was because he was dopped up.
Neither of them will ever be able to match the grace and skill of the great Lee Carsley.

Totally agree with ya,Lee carsley walks on water :)

It has to be Maradonna for 3 very important reasions....

    1) His amazing skill at football.

    2) His amazing skill at cheating.

    3) His amazing skill at shooting people with pellet guns.

Combine these 3 facts and he owns Pele's ass.

I voted Maradonna, but i wonder if its just cause watching old pele matches on TV leaves me cold, while i can actually remeber watching the magic of Maradonna live!

I guess it might be a generational thing.

Is there any posters here that has had the privilege to see em both?

Has to be Pele. Even though he played in much better teams than Maradonna.

As Jimmy Greaves said on the TV programme about 100 greatest world cup moments: Brazil would have won the world cup without Pele but Argentina wouldn't have won it without Maradonna.

But just look at the great moments from Pele in the World Cup: His lob against Czechoslovakia. His header saved by Banks. His dummy against Uruguay.

    They were all misses.

And still he scored 1000 goals + in his career. The man's a legend.

Its not about being a role model, Its about what they could do on a football field. The Media and FIFA publicise Pele because of his qweaky clean image over maradona and forgot about garrincha but garrincha was really better than Pele but Maradona had all the odds against him, he suffered racial abuse from everyone when he played for Barca and Napoli even the players, supporters of Barca and Napoli but eventually won the hearts of the Italians. He fought with drug addiction, like george best fought with alcoholism. look at the both of them now they are w@nked from their problems off the field.

    1. Maradona
    2. Garrincha
    3. Pele

Pele...just for that arrogant lob in the world cup from inside his own half!

Dempseyt Pele was a black man in the 50's ( the first to play for Brazil as far as I know) and he converted the hearts of the world in a much tougher time. I think it should also be rememberes that he got cut down alot more often and alot more severely than Maradonna did. Remember the game in the 50's to 70's era was a whole lot tougher than the mid eighties to the early nineties. To me there is no comparrison, there is only one Pele.

Compare some of the matchs that they played in, I seen Maradona getting busted more times than Pele. Pele only played for santos, maradona left argentina to play in europe. More racial abuse if you go to a different continent than if you stay inside your own country if you ask me

I hate that argument, Its not like the other 10 argintinians were donkeys.

Pele SHONE in three world cups, Maradonna was godlike in 1 (admittedly he was cut down in 82) and was less than impressive in 90.

Pele without a doubt is the greatest player to have graced the field.

( i saw him playing for the Cosmos on tv if that counts nakey:P )

Pele was the first black player to play for Brazil, not only did he have to endure racism but he had to beat it to get to the international team. He may have stayed in Santos but maybe you should check out what he had to put up with. As for you have seen Maradonna cut down more often than Pele, I am curious as to what age you are. If you are mid twenties or younger you probably have not seen nearly as much of Pele as you have Maradonna so it is hardly a fair comparrison. If you are older and have seen both often I am very surprised you arrived at that conclusion.

But to get back to the poll : Maradona of course!

When you think of Pele you think of that lobbed miss against Czechoslovakia and that audacious run-round of the Uruguayan goalkeeper from 1970. What do these two incidents have in common? Both were very ambitious and both failed to produce goals.

When you think of Maradona you think of his two goals against England in 1986. One a deliberate foul and the other a piece of magic that has never been repeated since at a worldcup (and yes I did see that guy from Saudi Arabia). Both goals showed a player who had the skill and also the will to do whatever it took to win.

I'll take that desire of Maradona to win (and help his team to victory) over the blinkered greed of Pele to score the perfect goal in order immortalise himself.
