Guns N Roses finished the show off... excellent.
I didn't see it, but downloaded it and Axl's voice sounds a bit dodgy!!

System of a Down deserved editing.

Art direction seems a strange award, Yellow???? Theres only a beach in that video, Do you mean Trouble? Even that didnt strike me as being the best Art Directed video this year.

only other good thing about last night's awards was Shakira doing the robot.

they re-shot a video for that song because the american audience didnt get the first one. the new one looked like a papier mache video, blend of live action and computer animation that looks like stop frame animation overall. i liked the first one for its simplicity more.

Slash has been gone a long time now man... I think the only original band member other than Axl is Dizzy and he's not even really original!!

I didn't find anything in it entertaining at all, and yes I was damn happy that Eminem got boo'ed.
"Uhhh, Im not afraid to hit a man with glasses..." - Dick head, why not just get on with the show, take the award (Which he didn't deserve in my opinion) and sit down... Oh wait, he can't. He's the "Best Rapper Ever" and that means he must take the piss out of people and act all tough... See that add for his interview!? How boring is that...

"I'm like, gonna get a million bucks and ****ing take a BATH in it!" - WOW
    I must watch that.
Basically, I sat up for the majority of the awards, realised how ****e it was and went to sleep...
Very un-entertaining, nominations and winners were definately chosen / planned out by people with lop-sided eye sight and cabbage for brains...

Christina Aguilera, just like Britney Speares and the majority of the famous female race, are skank muffins that rely on make up for their looks...

Even with that bath full of makeup that Christina was wearing she still looked like she'd frequently fell off the estranged, mythical ugly tree...

    The dress, however, was... OK.

I watched it until Jennifer Lopez won best hip-hop. After that I went straight to bed feeling sick.
Also, did anybody notice how many breaks were in it. It would be 2 awards or an award and performance and then ads.
If I see that MTV 20th anniversery ad one more time I'm gonna go mad.
Oh and when your man from RHCP and that Brittney Murphy presented the award, it wasnt funny, it just dragged on and on. Kind of like shoot me now and get it over with.
    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MTV.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭The Gopher

I stayed up to watch it and im sorry i did.Was it even live for chrissakes? That guy presenting it surely couldnt have changed clothes that quickly when he was doing his various pardoies of various artists. He was going from one to another in only a few seconds-is that really possible?I make habit of only watching live awards-that way they cant edit out the interesting bits.
Did you notice they had Eminem miming-they probably couldnt trust hoim to omit the swear words. He didnt deserve booing-Mobys a weird arsehole, his musics ****e and Eminem was only speaking his mind about him.
Twas good to see Micheal Jackson but unfortuneately he didnt do a performance as i was hoping he would(and i thoiught they kept hinting throiughout the show that he would to keep us watching). Then again Jacko probably needs help going to the toilet nowadays so moonwalking was most probably out of the question.
Britney Spears looked like the guy out of the Village People!!!!!!(seriously:D :D )
All in all a bit disappointing. The live performers didnt do their best songs i thought.

Dustaz-Coldlplays US video version isnt the beach one we all know-its sort of animated.Coldplay are ****e anyway really overrated. And how did J-Lo get best hip hop?Shes as much hip hop as Britney Spears!I also noticed alot of people booing the former New York mayor-perhaps some thought he was about to hijack the show for political intentions.

The only good thing about it was guns n roses performance at the end

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

No. I'd say the best part (from what I saw) was Nas' performance.
Anyway, I probably didnt like any of the other perfomers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 448 ✭✭Chowmein

Utter ****e. Except when Eminem got booed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

Actually though I'm not surprised everyone here disliked it.
    Well most people anyway.
I reckon it's going to be the 12 year old girls that enjoy it.
Also, how come MTV2 in America is like a 2nd main MTV but with lesser known acts while over this side of the water it's a more rock station?

The awards were terrible. Mind-numbing telvison interspliced with even more mind-numbing ads.

Seriously, there seemed to be more adverts than there was anything else.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭The Gopher

There was an adbreak every 10 or so minutes but its the same with all american tv.For example your typical simpsons ep has 3 breaks. One break which cuts in as the opening music finishes and 2 more later.I wonder which is worse-MTV USA or MTV here?Did any1 think the audience last nioght were awful-like all american audiences they cheered on every word of a prizewinner. When Michael Jackson thanked god i was fairly sure i could hear cheering:rolleyes: But as i said does any1 know if it was actually live? Those fake home shopping ads which accompanied every showing of clips of nominated artists also pissed me off.TBF Linkin Parks vid WAS good-no matter what you think of their music. And as said Eminem didnt deserve getting booed-he stood up and said what he honestly thought of the rot that Moby makes.Half the audience probably think Moby is ****e but they didnt have the balls to stand up and say it.Mind you I thought Eminem did get too many awards-I think the pop listeners who run MTV must have thought"Hey Eminem, hes that guy who does the rap thing isnt he?Sod the rest of the rappers in america as weve never heard of them ,just give it to Eminem. Now lads, weres my Backstreet Boys album gone?"
Also,I thought he looked very embarrased recieving his award from,of all people,Christina Aguilera.:D :D
I really hate the pointless prewritten banter between the 2 people who are announcing the winner-its ****ing sad!!!!

YEh what was the deal with GNR.

Who is actaully left in the band and who was playing on stage??
Obvioulsy that was a Slash Lookalike. That Keyboard guy looked like the original guy from the Use Your Illusion Days but apart from that I wasn't even sure it was Axl until he took of the glasses.

It was a really weird blast from the past watching it anyway!!

    --
And Michael Jackson thought he won Artist of the Millenium but in fact he was just getting a Birthday Cake from Britney and she said he was "her artist" of the millenium !!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,092 ✭✭✭Pigman

The only time I ever watched this show was in 1996 when the Smashing Pumpkins cleaned up and I swore never to watch it again. The 'legitimate' acts looked almost embarrased to be there and I'm guessing if it hadn't been due to pressue from the PR people that I lot of them wouldn't even be bothered being seen in the same building as a lot of the 'assembled' acts.

ok, the slash lookalike is Buckethead and the bass player is a guy named Tommy Stinson, who was in a band before joining the new G'n'R. im not sure, who else is in the new line up.

well the other giutarist was in nine inch nails...the drummer was in primus...

as foor his voice...the sound was crap for the whole awards...i saw GNR in leeds last week and his voice is as good as it ever was...and they churned out all the classics and they all sounded as good as ever...

as for the awards....linkin park = best rock band... LMAO

    highlights...the hives, the vines, GNR

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 620 ✭✭✭deco

Yes it was quite funny....the idea of Linkin Park being the best anything is quite disturbing....

  • Site Banned Posts: 334 ✭✭scuzzy

GNR sucked. They were just plain bad. It felt as if I was watching a tribute band. I didn't even know that was Axl until I saw it again. The Vines kicked ass and Pink's ans Sheryl Crowe's performances were quite good.

Too much rap/pop/rock schlock/****e overall though...

They werent the best admittedly buy as Jack Black noted about Stevie Wonder in High Fidelity....

IS it in fact unfair to criticize a
    formerly great artist for his
latter-day sins? "Is it better to
burn out than to fade away?"

They should have stuck to one as well. Rocket Queen or November Rain IMO :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,710 ✭✭✭Kurdt

fair enuff the medley thing was wrong...but they still have the talent and they showed it at leeds, dunno how the other shows went, but i saw a lot of impressed faces at leeds from the youngsters who only heard of GNR in the last while to the oldies with their white leather jackets with the biig GNR patches on the back...

I recently downloaded pretty much the entire Leeds concert... bootlegged of course, and I have to say, his voice is gone. Shíte.

Maybe it's just cos the quality is bad, but I don't think so, as I also managed to get some footage from Rock In Rio and his voice is fúcked in it also.

GNR are gone. That Buckethead fúcker is an arséhole.... for his guitar solo he does "The robot" with a pair of nunchuks and then gets his guitar and drivels on for a while.

The other guitarist is Robin Finck I think.... shíte. Drummer is crap.. he can't play Mr. Brownstone or November rain properly.... and Axl is fat.

If you watch the VMA's performance again... listen to the change from Madagascar into Paradise City... like a bunch of fúckin amateurs. Axl shold have stopped while he was ahead, and left it as it was. Good memories rather than the bóllox he's churning out now.

Hey Man, The drummers name is Brain and if youve ever heard Brain playing with Primus, he is unbelievable. I have a live cd of Primus playing on New Years Eve in SF. Best drums ever. He is not as good as Tim 'Herb' Alexander though (original Primus drummer)

I also agree that GNR are crap with their lineup of all non-original members.

Axl is a dick cos he made the original members sign away their rights to the songs cos he threatned to walk out on their world tour i think.

In the bits and pieces I saw of the show, the most sickening thing had to be the act of bandwagon patriotism with Rudy Guiliani. They introduced this chest thumping "tribute" using the Clashs "Rudy Can't Fail".

    Absolutely sickening.

I was in Leeds with Kurdt and GNR were amazing. Nothing dodgy about Axl's voice there. I couldn't believe their performance in the VMAs tho. I couldn't watch it! Pity all GNR fans couldn't be at the Leeds festival to see their knock-out performance because now the fans seem to be losing faith in Axl's ability to sing, which he still has btw. We've seen live proof.
(and my own input into the Linkin Park thing...there's nothing wrong with them. They're different and have their own unique sound. And for the record...they aren't a manufactured band contrary to speculation, but if u just don't like 'em then fair enough!)

Well, then my recording must be crap, or else it was better when you're there. You should try downloading it and seeing if it's as good as you heard when you were there. I don't think so.
Either way, I can't really watch them with some fool with a bucket on his head.

My name is Mud... I'm well aware of Brain's drumming ability, and yes, he's one of the best drummers in the world. I'm quite a fan of Primus's older stuff, I'm sure you've heard Tommy the cat live, where himself and Les do a drum\bass solo? Unbelievable!

But I'm sure you're aware of how different GNR are to Primus. Different style of drumming which Brain can't handle so well. I'm sure he could, but because he's such a talented drummer, he puts a bit too much into the tunes. Which takes away from the original feel of the songs. I myself (as a drummer) used to have trouble doing ballads or slower tunes, because I always played fast rock. I could explain more in depth from a drumming point of view, but I imagine this should suffice.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,072 ✭✭✭Sandi

The quality of the recording is gonna be different to what we actually heard there. And also, if the recording is crap it might be due to bad mixing by the engineer. I'm studying live sound and I didn't hear anything wrong with their performance in Leeds.
