Just curious - are there any lyrics out there that mean anything to you folks here or is it all just the noise that appeals to you?

I mostly listen for the music and more or less ignore the lyrics alotta the time to be honest, but slipknot have some good lyrics, and sometimes theres a meaning in there aswell :)

Yeah, can't remember which of their songs has this line, but the lyric "why am I so fascinated by bigger pictures, better things" rules.

Yeah that's a cool song, it's called "diluted", off their last album. Altho the last few lines make me look at corey funny....

God what the **** is wrong
You act like you new it all along
Your timing sucks your silence is blessing

All I ever wanted out of you was
    Something you could never be

Gimme any good reason why id need you boy??
Gimme any reason not to **** you up

Whatevs, but what about Corey's insinuated affectation for boys?
I can't believe I never noticed that one before.

Personally I more often listen to the music than the Lyrics, but I also think that the vocals are definetly part of the music, the sound of a singer's voice can greatly effect the music.

I agree with AngelWhore, it adds feeling and aggression into a song whatever it may be. I which is why I personally like Philip Anselmo's lyrics.

Correct and right, for instance, the new JJ72 song just came on MTV2 and while the music was ok, that guys voice just made me want to stick my fists in my ears and rip out my ear drums!

yeh words are pretty important eminem - not good i think but great lyrics at times and very intelligent man. and voice - linkin parks vocalist is excellent and slipknots vocalist can be class wen he wants (my plauge, wait and bleed). i think the lyrics to civil war by GNR are great, really makes you think. RATM have good lyrics and other bands i cant think off. neil youngs rockin in the free world has great lyrics, especially
"they'll be one more kid, never ever go to school, never get to fall in love, never get to be cool"
great, and paranoid is funny as hell.
"make a joke and i will sigh and you will laugh and i will cry, happyness i cannot feel and love to me its all unreal !

    great!!

    yes its important

    And 'nothing else matters'

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,655 ✭✭✭Ph3n0m

I think this just speaks for itself, taken from Suicidal Tendencies, "Just Another Love Song"

Well I just had to turn off the radio
But not before I heard thirteen songs about love in a row
Well I don't know what the next song's gonna be
But I know how the words are gonna go
They'll be singing 'Oh baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby I love you so'
So won't everybody sing along cause her comes just another love song

I need you like I need a hole in my head
I need someone to steal my money and wish I were dead
I need someone to always put me down
And everywhere I go she wants to hang around

    CHORUS
Do you really even think dreams come true
Do you really even think you'll find something wonderful and new
Do you really even think someone's waiting for you
Do you really even thiink that love is near
Do you really even think it's me dear
Do you really even think I want to hear-but I still say
I won't fall in love today

I need a chick who's got expensive taste
Who's not afraid of whose money she wastes
You expect me to buy you a diamond ring!
Well I suspect I'll buy you not a thing!

    CHORUS

Well I could tell you you're the only one I love
And how your eyes sparkle like the stars above
And that I carry a picture of you in my heart
And as long as we live we'll never be apart
And that you're the most important person in my life
But I can't handle a girlfriend, how am I gonna handle a wife

    Love-hate love-hate love-hate love-hate love-hate love-hate love-hate
    love-hate
I love, love, love to hate you but I'd hate, hate, hate to love you

I could promise all my love to you
But that would take me only a second or two
And if you're waiting to be my one and only
You're gonna find out what it's like to be awfully lonely
Your song was alright for awhile-But now your tune's gone out of style

You want to cuddle and hug all night
But I'm going out with my friends tonight
And I don't need someone to act like my mother
    I already have one-I don't need another

    CHORUS

    But she sure looks fine
    After a bottle of wine
    And she's out of sight
    When my mind's not right
And I'll promise you anything dear

Tool have the most amazing lyrics that I have ever come across in any genre of music...and Maynard has one of the best voices I have ever heard...

Just listen to Parabola off Lateralus:

We barely remember who or what came before this precious moment,
We are Choosing to be here right now. Hold on, stay inside...
This holy reality, this holy experience. Choosing to be here in...

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal all this pain is an illusion.

    Alive

This holy reality, in this holy experience. Choosing to be here in...

This body. This body holding me. Be my reminder here that I am not alone in
This body, this body holding me, feeling eternal all this pain is an illusion...
Of what it means to be alive

Swirling round with this familiar parable.
Spinning, weaving round each new experience.
Recognize this as a holy gift and celebrate this
chance to be alive and breathing
chance to be alive and breathing.

This body holding me reminds me of my own mortality.
Embrace this moment. Remember. we are eternal.
all this pain is an illusion.

    That is genius.

Even though Thearpy? have their moments...

I know how Jeffrey Dalmer feels...lonely,lonely

Ph3n0m, that Suicidal Tendencies song sounds like one the Insane Clown Posse did called 'another love song'. You should check out the lyrics to that too, they're quite funny. You know what, that guy who posted the original message in the "I'm a misogynist" thread in Personal Issues, I think he should take to listening to some of that stuff. Might give the silly sod some perpective

    pantera - hollow

you can feel the pain in this song...from the lyrics...even just reading the lyrics would upset anyone...esp if you've been in such a situation...and then when ya hear the song and the sadness and the anger....its just amazing that a song can make you feel such strong emotions...

Me too, Trent is my favourite lyricist. My fave NIN song at the mo is 'Hurt'. I love the piano bit at the start

    Hobnail Monkey, Ph3n0m... i apologise...

    dave intel(l)igence aint in spelling!

anyhoo...i shall add to the topic so this is not another pointless topic...

i know he aint metal but all of leonard cohens lyrics...if the man didnt play music he'd be a poet!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,655 ✭✭✭Ph3n0m

Kurdt, no need for the apology and you are quite right about Leonard Cohen's lyrics.

but i just realised something, it doesnt matter what type of music of what music you listen too, for each individual there will always be a message to be found, even in (shudder) pop songs. it just depends on whether the message in most songs is the one you want to hear (true, or am i just rambling again?)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 147 ✭✭Hobnail Monkey

I shudder to think that any boy or girlband could convey a meaningful message in the tripe they release. God, then that would make that uberdickhole Louis Walsh some kind of spiritual guru - not good!!!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,710 ✭✭✭Kurdt

fair enuff Ph3n0m...i'm sure there are ppl out there that find great joy in pop song lyrics...but i dont think they have the same affect...i mean...i was looking at an interview with the gallagher bruvers the other day and they made a very valid point about real music and real lyrics, saying songs can only be 'real' if they're true and inspired by a certain situation or person or whatever...

pop songs are made to make in money...most of the pop 'stars' dont write their own songs...therefore to me that aint real...but noel, when asked would he ever write an album as good as definately maybe, he replied that he wrote it when he was 21, on the dole, in the gutter so to say...and that hes never gonna be in such a situation again so he cant right that sorta stuff...

    sorry bout the rant...

what i am saying is, pop songs do not possess feeling....the sorta music we're talking about here does! and i think that makes a big difference...not just the music, but the feelings and emtions too...

    oh baby you know it!

why should they lie there so peacefully
while we're up above in such misery
i dont care if theyve already died
thats not enought o keep me satisfied...

i defintely thing vocals do more for a song than the actual lyrics.
listen to a lot of bands and they really dont sing about much.

2 classic cases are iron maiden and metallica.

neither have really ever gone for deep and meaningful lyrics, but both hatfield and dickenson have powerful voices.

and then listen to bands with whingey whiney lyrics like smaching pumkins or rem who are all deep and meaningful and they are pretty crap.

and mike muir just fúcking rocks

well ive plenty of lyrics that i really really love and that i think are beautiful....but seeing as this is the rock/metal forum i fugured this thread would be in keeping with that...see im not good at labelling things, i dont know what to class certain artists as...
jeff buckley, his lyrics are gorgeous
the smiths, so realistic, and you can relate to them
this mortal coil, beautiful, even if u cant relate to them its like a picture being painted :)

theres more but i dont know if i'd get away with saying them in here, it'd be more relevant in the music/radio and not rock/metal...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,287 ✭✭✭thedrowner

yeah suicidal tendencied are great....also king missile, good music backed by funny lyrics (check out detatchable penis, among others!) well..more satirical lyrics...theyre funy coz theyre true..(bar detatchable penis, i hope thats not true!)

Have never heard much Suicidal Tendencies, apart from one or two tunes from John Kennys old Metal show on 2FM. I went down the Henry Rollins road of rage instead - there's a great lyricist

but then i bursted out with shake your sweaty stinky booty.

and i even have cyco mikos first solo album.

although to be honest i havent got the last 3 st albums and i dont know if IG released abything after the family syco album, but i have there first three.

still a big fan, but not as mad about the new stuff. kinda lost the way when robert trojillo started influencing the music with heavy bass riffs and i think it took away from what was a great hardcore/skate/thrash* band

    *pick an album :)

There was a young girl, whose heart was a frown,
Because she was crippled for life, and couldn't speak a sound
And she wished and prayed she would stop living, so she decided to die.
She drew her wheel chair to the edge of the shore, and to her legs she smiled

"You won't hurt me no more."
But then a sight she'd never seen made her JUMP AND SAY
"Look, a golden winged ship is passing my way"
And it really didn't have to stop...it just kept on going.
And so castles made of sand slips into the sea,
    Eventually

From probably my most favourite song ever. Jimi Hendrix - Castles Made Of Sand.

Also I have to agree wholeheartedly with the vocals adding more to a song than lyrics. I love Rammstein and I can't understand a word they are saying.
