just wondering is it legal to drive over the border to the north with L-plates on your car ?
I went for a bit of sight-seeing yesterday in Co. Down, it sorta struck me that on a provisional, it might be illegal :)
Though i did see some cars with equivalent R-plates.
Anyone know what the legal position is ?

Going back about 7 or 8 years ago, myself and a few friends headed up frum Dublin to Belfast.

We were stopped at the checkpoint outside Newry, as was the custom of the time. The driver (another boards person who shall remain nameless) was asked for his licence, and produced his provisional. So the RUC guy asked me, in the passenger seat, if I was the qualified driver, escorting the learner. I said I was , despite never having sat behind the wheel of a car in my life, and he said fine.

Though he did order us to call into the first garage and pick up a set of L-plates, something that our driver previously hadn't bothered his arse doing.

So, yes you can drive on a prov. up the North, but you must have a qualified driver in the car also.

    But that was then...

youd want to check with your insurance company

most insurance companies will have you covered in the uk anyway IF u have a full licence, but not neccessarily with a provisional licence
