Well, if its fresh you want, then you can't really get any fresher than heading down to the Dun Laoighaire pier early in the morning, and buying the fish at the end of the pier on the coal Quay (the short stubbly pier in the middle).

I beleive they still have a shop from which they sell fish straight off the boats... (well they did 5 years ago anyway)..

good question skorn! for an island, we are piss poor at supplying fresh fish to the public! I was in Tesco's in Ballyfermot on Sat. morning and they had the grand selection of 4 tiny salmon cutlets, 3 rainbow trout and a few smoked haddock! with such a hugh choice it took me 0.05 seconds to decide on the salmon and trout.
I sometimes drag myself down to Superquinn in Lucan where the selection is a a lot better.

Tesco Ballyfermot is my local supermarché and I have to agree that their fish counter is (mostly) brutal.
There is now a guy selling fish out of a van in Ballyfermot (Gala end), he has the usual cod/haddock/plaice/ray etc. and quality is quite decent.

I would imagine you would have some difficulty obtaining fresh sardines as they are not to be found in the "local" waters.
