Jason McAteer is captain at the moment, but for how long? He's got his 50th cap now so I wouldn't be suprised if he retires from international football in the not too distant future.

Just curious what peoples opinions are on who'd be the next captain. It has to be someone with good on pitch presence...and a good bit of experience too...any ideas?

It's gonna be Breen. Get over it.

I'd like Matt Holland to do it. Pigman what exactly is Michael Collins supposed to get over?

I really dont want it to be Breen.
I still dont totally trust that guy on the pitch. I have nightmares about what he used to do. It wasnt long ago that i considered him the worst defender i'd seen in a long time to get international caps. He had a good world cup but i still aint totally convinced.

I'd prefer if Kinsella got it tbh.

    Guess sonly Mick knows ;)

The Captain is usually the best player which is prob Duff but he's too young, the obvious choice i think is Shay Given one of Irelands best players who's gurateed his place.

im think youll find its usually the player with the best leadership qualities, the most inspirational, and in most cases someone the rest of the players can talk to and respect. not necessarily the best player by a long shot

Indeed but it usually helps if the player is a regular 1st team player.

I'd also like to see Shay Given take the armband.

I'm not sure he'd want it, but he's guarenteed first team footie, both at club and international level for the forseeable future, ( barrinbg unforseen events) and he would have the respect of the public and the players.

McAteer's place is by no means cemented in the irish team, and when Reidy gets the bullet, who know what the next manager of sunderland may plan.

Yeah, Shay Given would definitely fet my vote. Possibly Kenny Cunningham if he got his full fitness back. I do not think Breen will be starting matches by the end of this qualifying group, I think O SHea will have him on the bench. If O Shea keeps getting man of the match awards for United it will be even sooner than that.
