That question is equivalent to asking which you love more your mother or father. Both were great systems, both had excellent games. the snes came out later and was technically superior but some of the games that were on both systems were way way better on mega drive. micro machines 2, that was the reason a friend of mine kept his md for so long. we still played sonic and mm2 up to as close as 1999. shadowrun, dear god how much better and darker can a mega drive game be in comparison to its snes counterpart. then there is flashback, where did it all go wrong for delphine? Sure the snes had....(insert long line of games) but each system had games that i will never forget and if that is the way you judge a console(which is actually the way you should) both are great. as for which is better?, my mum cooks better so i have to pick the snes.

Poll Sticky'ed. Watch and learn Sam. :p

Voted Snes tbh. Though I'm a big fan of Sega games, I'm a bigger fan of Nintendo..and the Snes was a much better system, clearly.

the mega drive was cool, remember those cool ads?

sonic2 + micro machines2 where classics, comparable to the great mario kart

    megadrive easily

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

the mega drive was pretty ropey.
dodgy 256 colour display (i think), crap joypad, no super metroid.......... (no super anything really)
    /edit
wait a minute, wtf was wrong with flashback on snes???
my memories not all there, but didnt it look pretty much the same as the md version
i've been playing it on dgen recently, but tbh the pc version was much better (the floppy version, not the dodgy cdrom one)
i must get round to dling a snes rom of it
(played it on the amiga as well, only briefly)

    64 colours from 4096
lets see, well the mega drive version had better graphics, no day glow greens and blues in sight in its palette, better sound, smoother animation and it came out first.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

    i stand corrected:(
it's still one of the best games i've ever played.
a few differences in graphics and sound dont really bother me, as long as the game itself plays the same
hey one word says it all

    Colloums
lol, that was my mothers favourite game too

A bit off topic but has anyone played Fade to black? made by the same crowd that made another world and flashback...and another reason i thought SNES was better Yohsi's Island, Mario Kart and killer Instinct....And of course Castlevania:) Anyone tried the GBA version? fúckin class

Yeh Logie I have if and its great. At least it was until I got stuck at the stupid 2 headed dragon fella.

Oh and I voted SNES for the Donkey Kong series and Super Mario Allstars (mine included Mario World :P). *Bliss*

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 2,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭LoGiE

Intresting to see the polls 50/50 thought the SNES would kick ass!
    Jabba
I've only started to play the GBA version and as a result i've downloaded most of the originals for a trip down memory lane:) I didn't realise they released a playstation version as well...HMmm

50/50 Hmmmm......pritty much as i would expect tbh. As has been said before they were both very good platforms in their day (and still are) and shared allmost equal status as far as popularity went. I had the Megadrive myself. Used to love the Sonic Games. Things are much more lobsided these days as far as consoles go which is a pity.

    Megadrive, without question.

What made it for me was the CD-ROM addon. Anybody remember Night Trap?:D

It is now playing happily on my Sega CD emulator. Ah, fond memories.

Haha:D I've got to disagree with you there Night Trap was complete and utter pants;)! Ecco The Dolphin, Sonic CD, WWF Rage In the Cage and Earthworm Jim: Special Edition are pretty good games worth checking out:)

In hindsight, I have to agree.:D

But the sight of real moving video, with lots of girlies running around - don't get me started on the "monsters".

Do you remember the amount of attention this game got? All the religious heads were up in arms in the US, some of them hadn't even seen it! They were brandishing it as a pornographic horror movie of sorts. To quote Sherlock Holmes from one of the other SegaCD games - "what bouldedash, what rubbish!". You'd see more now on an episode of Buffy.

I do remember all that rubbish about it alright:) didn't stop them making a sequel LOL!:p It was llike blaming the original GTA for an increase in car crimes and blaming Doom for an increase in shootings in public schools...nothing to do with the fact that you can by some serious weaponry over the counter(Including Mini guns me thinks:rolleyes: )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,212 ✭✭✭✭Tom Dunne

I didn't know they made a sequel. Was it for the SegaCD or the PC? What's it called (don't tell me it's Night Trap 2!).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭DiscoStu

Dont forget the insane amount of children who started dressing up as cowboys and started shooting american indians after mad dog mcree came out :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,817 ✭✭✭✭po0k

Flashback was great on the Amiga.

    Got Sonic 3 + Sonic&Knuckles + Toy Story (WOW! OMFG! 32-BIT! <drool>).
    Borrowed some other games.
    Good times.
    <sniff>
    Never got into the snes.

Was a SNES man meself .... Only think MD had over it was Mortal Kombat , they ruined that game on the SNES, The MD had all the original finishing moves ....."Finish Him !!!"

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 2,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭LoGiE

Both Snes and Mega Drive versions had the blood/Finish Him! turned off in Mortal kombat. You needed a code to turn it on, on the megadrive and I think a action replay cart to access it on the snes (Could be wrong about snes) The graphics where also a little better on the snes;)
I didn't know they made a sequel. Was it for the SegaCD or the PC? What's it called (don't tell me it's Night Trap 2!).
I can't remember at the moment, I'll do a little research but it defo had all the crap FMV etc:D As for mad dog mcree it wasn't that bad:) I remember playing it a few times in my local arcade and in the Plex in Coolock

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

    Two words.
    Mario Kart
    Game, Set, Match SNES.
Althought the MD was a great console, I never really liked the control pad (used to get blisters off it).
But I guess starting with a NES, a SNES was always going to be next inline.
Still play it ya know. Nothing better than some Mario Kart or F-Zero or Mario Brothers when you're bored.
Although as said Mortal Kombat was much better on the MD.
FIFA was better on SNES though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,488 ✭✭✭SantaHoe

Having owned both for many years...
I'd have to say the SNES.
Mario Kart, Pilot Wings, the whole mario platform series... 'nuff said.
I've never wasted more money on crap games on any other console than the megadrive... lord save us.
Anyone remember the adds with the guy sitting in his leather chair? - "Sega have over 500 megadrive games"... well he forgot to mention that 92% of them were utter crap.
You only have to compare the Street Fighter ports on both machines to see which one was technically superior.

Sure the MD came out first, and was the best console at that time, but it really aged horribly compared to the snes.

    Road Rash Superb on MD
    Mario Kart excellent.

I never had a favourite but if i was to choose it be Snes for Nintendo games and the pad MD was awful.

//ahh the good old days when Fifa was good on MD

    MD all the way.
Back in the day everyone had an MD around here. I never knew a single person with an SNES.
All those Mario games were the most overrated ****e ever IMO
Only one that was really great was Mario Kart.
If you wanted platformers the MD was the ****, Sonic is class and I still play Shinobi 3 on a regular basis to this day. No game has had such a great feeling since.

I never had any trouble with the MD pad. Aside from breaking 2 of 'em that is.

omfg! This thread just wont go away :)
XCRichard mario games overated? Dont think so..... Super Mario Allstars and Yoshi's Island are incredible games. I seem to remember some mags rating them 100% lol

Agreed Logie. The winner is clear. If theres to be any more discussions, start a new thread. Otherwise, I'm locking this.

    Hey Kairo, how's the craic?
Just back to college today. Way different course to last year, none of that C++ ****e for a start. Finally get to learn some useful stuff too by the looks of it, networking, systems maintenance etc.
What are you up to these days?
