Good shows that got ****e

What tv show do you lament the passing of greatness of?Meaning what shows did you watch religiously in the beginning but abandon when it started to die on its arse? One of the worst was the X Files.Pre roughly 1996 it was compulsive viewing.Alien abductions, monsters, serial killers, the whole shabango.Great running plots like the fate of Mulders sister. But about 1996 it all started going wrong. If i recall correctly Mulder(yes MULDER)stopped believing in aliens:eek:  Which pretty much destroyed the main concept of the show. When he finally regained interest id lost interest. My patience was wearing thin with Crhis Carters new ways for the show.Aliens suddenly became SO early 1990s,along with conspircacies by the government, cult activity and so on.Instead plots became more boring and confusing.Ive hardly watched it in the last five years.I hope they repeat the first few series soon-they were great.
Also, though it recovered in season 4 south park isnt on the disgusting high it had in 1998.It just isnt as provocative or hilarious anymore. So many running jokes largely abandoned-Cartman making fun of Kyle being a Jew,Cartmans ma being a derhty hoore, and the fact Chef has hardly made an appearence for years.I used to love his filthy love songs:D
On the south park subject i remember when i was in the states on holiday before SP arrived here.I saw people wearing these T Shirts with this little fat kid in a hat saying things like"If dolphins were smart they wouldnt swim into fishing nets "Funny **** i thought-but what are those little guys on the shirt?

I was over in the states watching the new southpark series actually..

Brilliant. Somthing appears in the news on Monday/Tuesday, and it's on the show(getting ripped) on Wednesday. Literally.

Eg: Tag is banned in America, because it discriminates against the person who is "it" (!). The next day south park were ripping it.

And there was plenty more examples :)

Speaking of shows that were great and got ****.
Top of my list (after x-files) would have tp be The Simpsons.

thenew episode that now and then jumps onto our screens are too far from comedy to be called comedy imo.

All the jokes have been done. The odd one is mildly interesting but most are utter ****e these days. You cant even enjoy the old ones cos they are blasted at you 24/7.

I too went off the x-files, but since the T-1000 came on, I'm hooked again. Unfortunatly he doesn't get to use all his t-1000 powers on them though. That would be cool:

    "Say.... That's a nice bike."

    child abductions
    that cuban boy scandal
    pokemon
    catholic priests abusing kids
    presidential election farce
    gays in scouts

pretty much all in the later series, when they ran out of ideas (simpsons did it) and decided there was enough comic ammunition in the shambles that is the american government :)
(trey parker & matt stone done a live-action comedy about the white house as well iirc)..
second series was easily the best, but for anyone to say its got as bad and stagnant as the x-files, friends, simpsons is pants imo :)

Simpsons has been ****e for about 4 years now. PLEASE CANCEL IT! PLEASE! PLEASE!

Pretty much any show that gets beyond 5 years turns to muck in my opinion. Simpsons is an exception to this but the show has been going for almost 13 years now and enough is enough.

Sorry lads but im a fast typist-no time for double spacing and the like.Particularly due to the fact im paying exorbitant rates to errorcom and therefore only can use the net for 5 hours a week.

A couple of hits on the return key every line or two won't drastically increase your phone bill, Gopher !! :)

In fact, as you are the thread author you could easily have written all of that lot offline costing you nothing in net connections.

Think of a better excuse for your bad punctuation next time.

err, Punctuation bitching aside, one that comes to mind is Scrubs, I rofled a plenty at the first series, but it got boring incredibly fast, Also one that comes to mind is "Homocide Life on the streets" Im usually loathsome of theese cop drama things, but I started watching reruns of the early series on Sky digital, It impressed me to no end, but After seeing a few of the newer eps on RTE a while back, It was obvious it had lost all its style along with most of its excellent original cast. A real pity :(

Isnt there just the one series of Scrubs?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,046 ✭✭✭Dustaz

2 series. Second was better. Ignore bel ;)

South Park is awful now, i`ve seen the latest series and ffs its bad, imo Series 3/4 were the best,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

Just thought of another one. Dream Team. When it started I really enjoyed it. All about the life of youth teams players, and how they tried to break into the first team.
Then for some reason they decided to kill off all the good characters and focus less on football and more on sex and scandal.
What was once a pretty decent program is now pure crap.

season 6 of southpark is just as good as any of the earlier ones. "goddamn mongolians, why you always come break my goddamn wall". the x files really has turned to poo but im still watching the last series to see how it ends.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭Caesar_Bojangle

South park is like a rollercoaster up down up down wowwwwwwwwwwwwww sharp left and so on, it went downhill for awhile put then it picked itself up again, same can be said for the simpsons.

I think the Simpsons is as trong as ever(well, almost). Why is every1 dissing the most recent epsiodes-they mightnt be as good as those done a few years ago but cast your mind back to 1990/91.Back then the Simpsons was utter ****e,it took a series or 2 to find its feet. Before that it was a very simple kids show-then it suddenly became more intelligent and satirical.I mean, remember the first episode?Homer selling the tv?What the fu*k!!!Plenty of tv shows take a while to find their feet-for example Only fools and horses, which IMHO is the best sitcom in tv history, wasnt all that great in its first series. If you watch the earilest episodes you will find certain features absent from newer ones. For example Del used to use his French phrases correctly. But then the wirters realised that it would be funnier to portray him as an uneducated showoff, constantly using the wrong french at the wrong time,as well as french which had nothing to do with the situation(2 hilarious examples include"Pas de Calais as the french chefs say"(port of calais)and"Menage a trois Rodney!"(continental porn enthusiasts will know what that really means). Some shows improve with time.

the Simpsons seems tiring these days because it must be on 1,000,000 times a day. seeing the same episodes over and over again will piss anyone off. tonights new episode was great IMO

Once I saw the 'civil war reinactment' bit it smelt a bit of a rat as though one of the writers had secretly been watching the south park episode where the south refuse to lose and go on a rampage over the midwest stealing all the schnaps they can get their hands on. Anyway, then I realised that it was an Apu episode and just turned it off straight away. If ever there was a character who should have remained just a bit player its Apu.

its not that they were trying to rip off south park its this strange structure that has crep in over the last few years. start the show off on some totally absurd/surreal premise that somehow links into the main arc of the episode. the problem is that these opening scences take up well over 1/3 of an epsiode. this reeks of a lack of ideas or a lack of ability to flesh out these ideas into a full show.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭The Gopher

Stu is right-pracitally every episode starts off on something which on the surface has nothing to do with the main plot but later intertwines with it.Toinghts epo was great I thought.I like Apu-I think hes one of the better characters.

Father Ted was getting boring but when you watch repeats it's still funny
It's lucky they ended it when they did as the 3rd series was a bit crap

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭The Gopher

I suppose your right-while by no means a bad series the last one wasnt just as sharp as the previous ones(are you sure there were only 3?)
As for the Simspons the other night it contained a Homer quote worthy of one of his best
"Hey Apu,were doing our civil war renactment.Wanna come?We could do with some more Indians to shoot!"
Apu(looking confused)"That makes so little sense I dont even know where to start to correct you!"

You know the way we were talking about south park ripping the piss out of different issues. Well i stumbled across this site check me and it turns out matt stone (one of the guys who created south park) is actually jewish.

Just thought it was weird that they constantly slag jews when he is infact a jew.

Father Ted was ended due to Dermot Morgan dying.Considering he was the greatest Irish comedian ever, I wouldnt consider this lucky.

X-files has gone downhill big time.Series 5 onwards is just a pale comparision when you consider what has gone before it.
The Simpsons - As has been previously stated by so many in so many different treads, they really need to end the show as the new episodes just suck. They seem to just fizzle out midways through the episode. But considering that The Simpson's is Fox's major cash cow,I cant see it being cancelled any time soon.

South Park was interesting at first as the stories were just so fúcked up it was unique. But a show that just use's shock tatics for the sake of it can never hope to stay fresh.

Any show can only stay fresh for so long untill it runs out of steam. The fact that the more popular show's get repeated so often on channels like sky One, just hits them harder with the yawn factor.

Eh? What's weird about it? The main reason they enage in so much slagging and get away with it, is because he's Jewish.

My point was why would you constantly slag not only yourself but humiliate your entire family by mocking them for being jewish. Thats why i thought it was odd.

Yeah - must agree, early series of Sliders were brilliant :)

Yeah! Early Sliders! And anyone I told just didn't believe me. Then it got s**t with all that dimension-jumping-alien crap. Or more accurately: all that how-are-we-gonna-increase-the-ratings-alien-crap.

Its because its satirical.Satire often includes the abillity to ridicule yourself and your own people. For example the writers of Father Ted are Irish, but it didnt stop them ripping the piss out of the stupidest things of Irish life(such as Mrs Doyles pilgrimage up the mountain which hinted at sado masochism. In reality trips to the likes of Lough Derg are apparently like this nearly-I find it quite sick people would totture themselves like this and theyre taking the piss out of it)Most of us in ireland are officially catholics but it doesnt mean weve never told a joke which ridicules the church(and alot of us realise that the catholic chuirch has for centuries exploited simple minded folk for financial gain). In the same way that Irish comedians/scriptwriters lampoon the insanely religious culchies they knew when they were growing up Matt Stone makes fun of some of the hypocracys and holes in his own religion.
And by the way the 2 guys who wrote father ted first came up with the idea of a sitcom taking the piss out of Irish religion/people when they saw a tv item about a group of priests who were blessing a bicycle :D:D
