    Easy difference

The Manchester scheme you mention is more like Apple's Airport technology - it gives people with the requisite equipment high-speed wireless Internet access in specific areas - hotels, airports, cafes, colleges and so on. The cost to the user is likely to be zero. Additionally from the article you posted it's using Bluetooth.

i-Beam is a commercial offering. Cost to the user is greater than zero. It's based on the 802.11b standard. Customers are linked back to one local node and ultimately back to Beamsolutions via satellite.
