    The situation...
Have a laptop connected to a desktop via crossover cable which i use for file storage. The monitor thats currently being used on the desktop is now required for a new PC that I've put together.
I'm wondering is there any program available that will let me see the desktop of the old desktop from the laptop for the purpose of shutting it down or fixing any problem etc..
    All suggestions are welcome:)

Get yourself a copy of VNC , its a terminal services type of programme (and its shareware) , you will still need a monitor if you want to do anything before the OS is loaded though ie: bios changes

    VNC - Virtual Network Computing.

    This is all you need.

    Get it Here.

PCAnywhere will do the trick. You have to buy it though.

A good alternative is a package called VNC which I am as we speak using to control a terminal in Canada.

    Download it for free here:

What OS are you using? If its XP pro you can use Terminal Services.. also comes with 2k server SBS(not sure about pro).

There was a similar post some months back on this board I do recall.

At that stage I was recommending VNC for this type of things as were several others but what was also recommended was a slightly stripped version of the standard VNC package called TightVNC.

Apparently ( haven't had the need to use it just yet - but have installed it on my pc at home ) it's much better for managing bandwidth especially when trying to view remote images over dial up connections. You should be able to get it here
I know in this case bandwidth shouldn't be a problem, but you never know when you might need/ be greatful for an app like this.

VNC is great for x servers
and the win32 port is brill also
but, if u use win2k and you have the alt+ctrl+del enabled for log in then vnc is quite limited.
Thats the only problem I have, There is a program made by intel called lanDesk, its really suited to win platforms, buit I am afraid that you have to buy it.

AFAIK, you can send CTRL ALT DEL requests to a machine within VNC.

Afaik if you move your mouse to the top left corner (not 100% sure), you'll get a menu allowing you to send a Ctrl+Alt+Del interrupt.

Or you could get rid of the need to to hit [CTRL] [ALT] [DELETE], by going to:

[Start] [Settings] [Control Panel] [Users And Passwords] applet

    [Advanced] tab, and check off:
[] Require users to press Ctrl-Alt-Delete before loggin on.

Only supported in Win2K and XP (as far as i'm aware)
