    nope.

fate is nothing more than a series of experiences that you interpret to form a continuous narritive.
there is nothing preordained in your future, what is more important is what you choose to learn from the adversities that life throws in your path.
    that and something about sunscreen.

i didnt believe in fate till a day ago , i was walking down to road to the pub to have dinner , and i almost stepped on a snail , who was crawling up the road , like , pretty much touched his shell with my foot then suddenly pulled my foot up and missed him...

then after dinner on my way home (about 3 hours later) , about 50 metres further i here a scrunch under my foot , and what looks like the snail i passed on my way to the pub is daed! ( well it might not have been the same snail but i swear it looked like the same colour etc) and i thought "wow".

(might sound sarcastic buts its not)

I dont get where fate comes into that snail.... you noticed it first time so did not step on it.. then you come out of a pub.... maybe after a drink or two and dont notice the snail... nothing preordained about that other than the snail was bound to get stood on... probably not even by you.. it was probably dead and you stood on the remains...

its like Astrology... if you know anything about stars and astronomy you can laugh at the absurdity of people who believe that crap!!

Well having a "fate" would require believing in such stuff.

And if you truly believed you have a fate then you wouldn't see any possibility of "missing it".

So its really dependent on what you think!

Not unless you have a strange concept of fate.

For those who believe in fate, it is effectively predestination.

How can you miss something which was predestined? If you miss it, it couldnt have been predestined, and therefore it wasnt your fate.

Of course, some people take the easy road and believe in fate, but not in predestination. While I would consider that self-contradictory, what this idea basically boils down to is "que sera, sera". Again...you cant really miss anything.

hmm.. interesting thread this is. I believe that life can be a bit of both. In the case of september 11th i dont think that was Meant to happen to those poor people so a don`t believe in bad fate. I believe that fate works only for good.

I think you make your own fate. Believe in determinism will only lead to complacency in life.

Besides if one believes in a predestined fate then surely its unmissable?

No, I don't believe in fate, being a Catholic free-willer.

If it did exist, it wouldn't matter whether we knew about it or not, since by definition, it can't be changed.

If it doesn't exist, there's no need to change it.

Therefore, knowledge of fate does not matter in any circumstances. Quod erat demonstrandum. In any case, I would concur with the previous speaker that belief in fate causes sloth and complacency, ultimately leading to an acceptance of mediocrity in life, and a wish to achieve short-term goals only. That way, the "social constructors" can run our lives in the long-term for their own gain. Crazy... or is it.
