Yes this receiver is definitely analogue though it's headline is "the next generation in TV viewing".

I installed a Welltech one last year for someone but the dish didn't last 9 months because the assembly holding the reflector was plastic! Basically, the pan blew off!

999 programmable slots aren't much good with only about 50 channels on Astra (with maybe another 50 radio).

Channels worthwhile on Astra are IMO, Eurosport, CNN, CNBC, DSF (sport), MTV Germany, MTV2, Viva(music), Viva Plus(music) to name a few. I see it mentions NBC Superchannel too though unless it's on Hotbird, it's not on Astra.

The receiver does have DiSEqC 1.0 if this is any help to anyone.

The Limerick Leader reported on Monday that there was a mad rush last Thursday morning to get these at the Limerick Lidl. The majority of the people waiting to enter the store were elderly people. Two men even ended up on the ground fighting over the last one.

It also reported that a man suffered a heart attack at the Mullingar branch in the rush for the same receivers.

I hop they enjoy their CNN and MTV Germany.:)

    Hi All
    This is going to be a bit off topic but............ . . . . . . .
    <Rant>
Has the Irish population gone mad?
There is now a hugh Compo and lets get what we can from the Ba*t**ds type of attude here now.
I think there are even ads on the television now for no win no fee sham merchants.
</Rant (taken without permission from someone else) >

I mean look how bad it has become one one man dies because he wanted to buy a cheap sat system and i bet he would not have been able to set it up right.

The thoughts i posted here do mean i think everone one is the same.

Any way i will stop Talking (typing) now.

Yes, you've gone completely off topic.

Re: the question as to whether Irish people had gone mad etc.

I went to my local Lidl hoping to buy one of the meter thingies. There was a queue of about 100 or so at five to nine!

As far as I could see, most of the purchasers were immigrants. They bought two or three of the dishes/receivers each, and they were all gone in less than a minute. No fights though......:(

I am somewhat puzzled by this. If its the case that people don't understand what they are, then it's surprising that there havn't been stories about disappointed customers, especially since these dishes have been sold before.

For some people this would be a great deal, perhaps for our European brothers and sisters who are living here, or those wanting to learn a new language, or those who like playing with satellite system, but for the vast majority of people...why bother?...

At €59.99, and assuming they work, I don't think anyone is going to complain. I agree that (Eastern) Europeans might find them useful- TV from home etc.

My guess is that the natives who purchased did not know much about what they were buying, and are now staring at the Turkish equivalent of The Lyrics Board in wonder......

Actually, that's probably a superior show...........

    :D
And they're the lucky ones who had some idea of how to set it up. I suspect many people are still waving the dish around in their living rooms, muttering and wondering how they get the damn thing going.

Am I the only person on this forum that actually managed to get one of these things??? :D I braved the crowds and while everyone else went for the pile I went to the store room and got one from there.

Havent got the thing set up yet, but according to the manual, the channels are set up to receive all the FTV satellites that there are - not just Astra and Eurobird etc. I'm hoping to motorise this one so I can check out some of the more obscure satellites up there.

But what was funny was the people in the shop. A few came up to me asking how to set it up - I told them. But one woman came up to me and said that her friend refused to get one as "If he did, Sky would come after him looking for money". I told her that this was untrue, and laughed to myself for a while.

But there were fights in the store... immigrants came and took 3 or 4 each, so there were a few heated exchanges.

Got the Comag unit last year, but I dont know if its analogue or digital. Can I pick up the likes of BBC, ITV etc using an analogue reciever or does it have to be digital?

Or lack of knowledge. These systems are not that cheap for what they are.

    You need a Digital Receiver.

The Comag SL55 is a Digital Receiver.

You also need LNB, Dish and good cable. And point it at accuracy of 1 degree or better!
