I have a question...I was just reading about asylum seekers in Ireland and that they are political refugees...my question is this:
Can someone from the United States apply for asylum in Ireland?
what grounds would they have to do so?
    and why would they?

I appreciate your help on this one, I only read about people going to America for asylum but not the other way and am curious if it is possible for someone there to do this.

    Thanks

I dont think anyone could answer the third question, but the answer to the first two is relatively straightforward.

People of *any* nationality can apply for asylum in *any* country, as a general rule. AFAIK, Ireland doesnt have a list of "countries we will accept asylum seekers from".

Grounds? Same grounds as anyone from another nation - life in danger, torture, blah blah blah. Of course, a criminal wouldnt get very far, because the Irish would extradite him to the US.

You'd need to be talking about someone demonstrably innocent who is living in genuine fear for their lives under the controlling powers of their nation.

I cant actually think of a situation where that could realistically happen with a US citizen, nor can I imagine why they would choose to come to Ireland.

Question: Does an American citizen need some sort of work permit or visa to come and work/stay here?

a group of medicinal cannabis users are currently applying for asylum in canada after the federal government overturned the states laws governing the legalities of such cannabis clubs.
They argue such interference ammounts to political persecution by the federal authorities and intervention in a states rights to its own legislature...thats as i remember it off hand.

    to Blade: Yes and yes.

    to Bonkey:
I'd agree with your first two points anyone can apply anywhere - getting accetped is the problem.

Possinly in the 40s, communists could have applied as trhere were being perseuted in the states, but this country woud not necessarily have been friendly either.

I wonder could you apply now on the basis that the President doesn't have a valid mandate?

while this is off topic....what I have been able to find out is that depending on the work this person is qualified to do they need one or the other...they can find out by calling the local Irish consulate general if what they need is a visa or work permit. If they do not need a visa then they have to be offered a job and a work permit is filed for them, its not something you can apply for like a visa. There are a ton of websites that talk about this...just type in Move to Ireland under search and you'll find some info there.

About the refugees...I wonder if an American could claim asylum because of the whole middle east thing going on? Say they were against the efforts of war right now and feared that a world war would break out making America target for nuclear bombing? while this may be a possibility at some point and not now could this be made as an argument ... sorry that I just dont know a lot about this sort of thing which is why I ask.
    thanks

I doubt you could, but why doesnt Bush have a valid mandate???

The only people who could possibly apply, that I could think of, would be America citizens of middle-eastern descent - probably first or second generation.

They could argue that the current regime is persecuting them, based on the current so-called "anti-terrorism" steps being taken, which is largely focussed on a single ethnic group - or at least, thats what the media's representation of it would appear to say.

On the other hand, I'm not sure the Irish would accept that as valid reasoning - particularly given how much the world is caught up in the current "middle-eastern-terrorist witch hunting" frenzy.

Ah, twas said in jest. Not really a subject that I want to go into. Bush is the man - unfortunately IMO - but he the man.

Talking of asylum seekers from the developed world a while back a German neo Nazi tried claiming asylum in the states on the grounds that he was politicaly persecuted due to Germanys strict laws against Nazi public expressions and so forth.
