    Sad day for Sports fans.
TT252 is now an ex-radio station.

Yep, static on 252 kHz LW and removed from the Sky Digital EPG (rather smartly too.)

Its not really a sad day for sports fans, because they really didnt add anything to the existing sports radio environment, they couldnt compete with Talk Sport let alone Five Live. And as Talk Spurt is pure dung, what did that make TeamTalk? At least TS has
some live sport! (sadly, I'll have to listen to the Ashes on TS, and not Radio 4 LW this winter  )
And so the 252 frequency is back in the hands of RTÉ, what will they do with it????

As I drive for a living and RTE sometimes drives me nuts, I gave TT
a bit of my time most days, I'll miss it a bit, mainly James H in the afternoons. Now as the frequency is free may I sugest again that
RTE strike a deal with Five Live to bring those not
    on NTL(Dublin)/satellite, quality sports coverage...

    Drool! Ideal solution :)

That or an Irish "5 Live" News and sport for Ireland....

    But Bob told me no.

So that's what happened! I was trying to tune into it today in the workvan but got only static! I was thinking the Blaupunkt was on the blink!

Ain't gonna happen. The BBC would have problems with with clearing sports rights (particularly football) and this is already the case with 5live being encrypted on Astra 2. Also the BBC could not justify spending licence payers money on a transmitter for a "foreign" audience where it wouldn't make any money (whereas the BBC1 & 2 on Sky Digital does), and where 252 served the UK well, so does transmitters on 909, 693 and 990.

Rumours are already floating about as to what will happen next. With RTE now gaining 100% control of the frequency, it's thought that any future station will be based in Ireland at RTE's insistence (though of course, mon€y talk$!) some of the suggestions include relaying RTE Radio 1 or 2FM on 252, OneWord being transmitted (Please not), and also UCB (God, NO!) with a legitimate output. Chris Cary also recently reported that he would like to relaunch the old superpirate Radio Nova on the frequency, but it'll probablay be a cold day in hell before RTE thinks of that.

I will give you odds of 1,000,000-1 of him getting the frequency from RTÉ and an EPG position on Sky Digital :D:D:D:D:D

Bring back the original Atlantic! ( i know this won't happen!):D

Maybe they'll broadcast that obscure channel that's only available via stream on the net. CeólNet, IIRC!

Damien - has the frequency been actually handed back to RTE, or is it perhaps in the control of the liquidators?

If it is back in RTE`s hands, then Radio One must be the sensible option. The 252 LW frequency can be heard more or less anywhere in Ireland (even where topography makes it difficult for FM/MW stations to be heard) and would also allow ex-pats in large parts of the UK to listen in.

    Now for moderator mode -

    ATTN -
Thread moved to the broadcasting forum.

Ah, a quick visit to Unison.ie indicates RTE has bought out the licence.

Annoying not being able to buy the Irish newspapers in Berlin...am making do with the Guardian! (Touch typing on a keyboard where Y and Z are reversed also annoying!)

Well, maybe they have bought out the rest of Teamtalk's contract with RTÉ, but its not certain that they will use it for a domestic service.

Remember that on the two occasions, the Radio Tara frequency has been let to UK aimed broadcasters, and, in fairness, its the most profitable route for RTÉ. Music did work for a time then it didnt, Sports talk hasnt worked, what will?

A UCB type station would not be a bad commercial decision for RTÉ.

    PS:

Ronan: clear out your PM box! :)
