Just stumbled across this list of nice font tools, thought it would be of use to some here.

Font renamer, a few font viewers (for both installed and uninstalled fonts) and they're all free.

i use the bigger version of one of those programs which is great. http://www.theill.com/fl/default.asp
it allows grouping of fonts and installing and uninstalling.

While on the subject of fonts, anyone know of a tool which given text in a bitmap/GIF/JPG will correctly identify the font with a reasonable rate of success?

I've tried some web-based solutions for this, but none seem to work with a great degree of accurracy.

    Thanks in advance!

I have never heard of one sorry.
As far as i know the web based ones have a human at the other end who does the identifying.

Nah, I used an automated one, which identifed the characters in the gif/bmp and then tried to match them up mathematically...

It correctly recognised all of the characters, but unfortunately didn't correctly recognise the font...

http://www.whatthefont.com is pretty cool. I get good results with it a decent proportion of the time, but it's certainly not always perfect...
