Teaching English in Beijing / Shangai / Taipei

I've got a year before doing my Master's and am wondering what do with myself. I've come to the conclusion that I would like to go abroad for the year and teach English. I'd like to go to China or Taiwan, as the colleges there seem to offer return flights as standard, and free accommodation (but lower wages in lieu of course :) ), and no TEFL qualification is needed, just a degree.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone has had any experience of any of the three cities above (Beijing, Shanghai or Taipei), teaching, working or visiting, that they would care to share. I have a Taiwanese friend who's working in Beijing, so I probably will end up going there if I do go, but want to weigh up the pluses and minuses of all first.

    Thanks,

    Michael

heh why do you not go to china for a year and learn chinese -b instead of just getting you low wages - you willm come back speaking another language

i have a french friend over there at gthe moment

she started in pekin then went to chingdao (the beer place) and is now in another place learning chinese

a year in china with flight boarding courses and food

all for the price of 3.000 irish pounds

for me that is better any day than teaching english

chineses is the language o learn

she wrote to me (email) a few weeks ago and is really having a great timez

Only IR£3000... I wish I could say that :( I know it's very cheap but I don't have that kinda cash knocking about.. I'm guessing that I'll still pick up the language - I'm a language graduate anyway, so it makes it that bit easier.

I do not totally agree - most people do not pick up a language like that because it is too difficult - one can get a student loan for something like that. If you want to teach try contacting the Chinese Embassy in Dublin and ask them for advice.

I know I can do it cause that's what I did in Spain and France - I wasn't attending formal lessons. Anyway, it would be valuable experience.
