    Lo all

I'm handing in 1 month's notice today, I was looking at Irishjobs last night, and all the bloody jobs on it are for Linux/unix admin's. So if anyone knows of any jobs going for Systems admins with the following skills please let me know.

    AS/400 sys opper (cert)
NT4 workstation/Server, Windows 95/98/2000, D.O.S, and just started to learn Linux RedHat.
    Networks (patching, configuring, TCP)
Exchange/Mailsweeper or mimesweeper (how ever you like to say it)
Computer Hardware (building and Mods and so on)
    Back up systems
Just started to teach my self Linux RedHat 7.1
Application support (office and 3rd party software)
    Printer support, server config

My Job title is System Administrator, I have one year exp at this and before myself and gerry had started up a small out of the home, company called Leixlip Computer Upgrades. We done on site Techsupport and Build New systems.

Now for the job that is opening. System Administrator, for Dolmen Butler Briscoe, 4 earls fort terrace, Dublin2.

    You will need to know:
AS/400 sys opper (you dont really, they will send you on a course)
NT4 server and workstation (Workstation is a must have, server you can pick up, but it would really help to know before hand)
Networking (patch panels and setups, system settings and so on)
    Printer support.
Application support is a must have as well.
If you can use the Meridian phone system that would be a big help to you.
SQL is not needed but if you know it and can use it, It would REALLY help you out

pay is not the best, I was/am on £16,000 a year, you dont get overtime pay (as in once you go over your set hours you dont get payed at all) a lot of really great ppl and some not so great. They will send you on courses.

[EDIT: put in other knowen OS's]

why dont you do the normal thing and get a job first?
and what do you want? i mean what sort of job?
you dont know enough to be a network engineer, but you are probably over qualified for support. become a specialist?
you dont have enough in an anyone area. jack of all trades and all that.
fined yourself a field engineers job, send your cv to amp. i believe they are looking for an engineer. you get a car/van and its very good for learning. they will put you through and mcse and you get to learn routers and bridges and exchange and 2000 and all sorts of nice stuff

pffft! youve got to pay the bills as well.
well then, theres a hundred and one jobs out there. go learn.
but dont expect to get paid too much more than you are on now.
in IT you seem to always be paying your dues.
    unfortunately

    pffft! eh, stuff...

Anyway, try the Insurance Companies. I've developed a lot of systems for Insurance Companies for my sins, and most of them have AS/400's. Most financial companies will have them. 16k is about right for 1 year experience, but tell them your on 18 and ask for 20. It's common practice though possibly illegal.

Oh and I didn't tell you this, but Duetche Bank on Abbey Street in Dublin are recruiting at the moment.

I am trying to get into Jr Linux/Unix position but most Junior Unix offers are looking for at least 1 year working exp so know your stuff backwards and exagerate on your experience - that is what I will try soon

Your unlikely to get any job doing sys-admining without any experience, Sutty. Mess with the different OS's (for the laugh) first.

er...... I've been a sys admin for the past 6 months, before that I was a Jr network admin. I know the following os (very well)
D.O.S, window 3.1,windows 95/98, Windows NT server and work station and terminal, Windows 2000 pro and OS/400.....that enough for you? oh and I just started to teach my self how to use Linux.

You were asking for a Jr Linux position, and you have little or no experience with Linux (as you stated).

Statistically it is easier to get another job if you are already in a job.

16K for what you listed is not nearly enough for that kind of job, unless they are expecting to fill it with a junior. Is that QSYSOPR? or QSECOFR?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,109 ✭✭✭sutty

Hobies its a QSECOFR, I've done the QSYSOPR Course and got a cert, then in work my boss got me up to a QSECOFR. I did start off as here as a Jr on £13000 and in march the "raised my status" and raised my pay as well.....

JustHalf... I know I wouldn't get a job right away, and that I need to know more, what I was hoping for was some where that would train me up. As of yet I'm an NT sys admin.

Also just to note, I'm still in the job, I handed in a months notice and I have been look for jobs....which reminds me....must ring skills group
