It goes away with age. Seriously. Your personal paranoia will lessen as you get older.

Chances are you're not ugly. Despite my personal accusations that boards users are about as attractive as a skid mark on my granny's knickers, I don't think anyone is really ugly. And if your colleagues and friends are telling you that you're not ugly, accept what they say. Relax.

Don't resort to plastic surgery. If you feel that your issues with your appearance are grounded in issues with yourself or your past then see a councillor. If you feel it would make you feel better, then see a councillor. Seeing a councillor isn't an extreme tactic. Plastic surgery is.

Most importantly, just in case you're trying to chase a particular 'look', by this I mean you're modelling your appearance on someone on TV or in a band etc. etc., stop that. Don't bother trying. They have armies of stylists. You don't. Just treat yourself every so often to buying one thing that looks good on you - don't buy it just because it's on sale or whatever, find something that suits you and buy it. Make an effort.

    Most importantly, relax.

(And be glad you're a guy. It could be worse, you could be a gurl. There's this thing young teenage girls are sometimes advised to do, it's called the 'pencil test'. You place a pencil under one of your breasts and let it go. If it stays there by itself, your breasts are sufficiently large that you require a bra. If it clatters to the floor, a set of cornplasters will probably do the trick. I am no longer a young teenage girl. I'm 25 years old, and my arse passes the pencil test...)

Your poll is locked, Unregistered, because this can only be a debatable matter.

I believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you like yourself - you are gorgeous. If you don't like yourself, get to the bottom of it and understand what makes you unhappy.

its a shame that people who like themselves are often mistaken as vain.
people who are confident are often mistaken as egotistical.

its a shame that people with issues often tend to resent people who are happy and confident with their personalities, their bodies, their looks and their own attitudes.
and those people try to undermine others.

and they are the ugly people.

pencil test is totally on topic, the topic is fúckin retarded(posting a poll with no pic), so pencil test eh measures titty sag [snip] one liner about oblong bananas removed

friends generaly stay quiet instead of saying something bad so if they are saying you are attractive id believe them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,658 ✭✭✭✭The Sweeper

I would just like to state that I never intended this thread go off topic and onto the topic of the pencil test.

I would also like to state that I can't believe you people, predominantly male as you are, are correcting me as to what the pencil test is.

I mean, YOU never did an impression of the chicken dance while muttering 'I must, I must, I must increase my bust' did you?

/me refers boards.ie to teen angst author Judy Bloom.

And in order to try an justify this as a remotely on-topic thread, I believe that people's personalities are responsible for 50% of their attractiveness, with the other 50% being their appearance. If paranoia about your appearance is making you sullen, uncommunicative, shy and antisocial, then you're losing points on both halves of the attractiveness stakes.

It's true that beauty is in the eye of the beholder - don't judge yourself too harshly, as you cannot see what others do.

if one person thinks your attractive , well then you are ,!well thats what i think any way , what is ugly ?i d`ont think this can be totally answered , some people have ugly personalities ,beauty is not all about looks , you have to have a balance to become a beautiful person , , ,,,,what good is looks , if you are a bitter person ?every body has good and bad points , ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,stay away from the plastic surgery , there are different perceptions of beauty just work on your bad points and exploit the good .

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
It hides in the strangest places and is different to each and every person. What's beautiful to me could be ugly for you, you are thinking too much and confusing yourself.
Or you could post your pic on www.hotornot.com and see what other people think of your looks which are worthless if you have no personality anyway, so either way you can't lose :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,400 ✭✭✭TacT

Hadn't read this forum too much lately, it's a pity it's gotten so crazy with all the mid twenty year olds hormones flying around the place. The teens seem to be doing ok :p
Why would you want the topic closed merc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

phew, glad im in my late twenties.

and no, im not ugly :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,193 ✭✭✭Kix

Very few people are actually born "ugly". I mean, it's actually really rare. Oh sure, if you live a harsh existence (self inflicted or otherwise), you might end up that way but that's not what we're talking about here.

Come to think about it, the only people I've ever thought were ugly had nasty personalities - it wasn't a physical thing.

So you're not likely to be ugly, and clearly other people find you attractive? You just probably haven't shaken off your teen angst completely - hang on for 30, you'll probably feel grand about yourself then (you'll start worring about your health instead :))

Never said they did. The point I was trying to make is that the media image of 'the body beautiful' is unrealistic and you should spend more time trying to make the best of what you have as opposed to striving to look like something you're not.

It can be very difficult to accept yourself as what you are, but you shouldn't assume this acceptance is synonymous with resignation or defeat. The more miserable you are about yourself the less effort you'll be inclined to make to improve yourself. It has a knock on effect though - if you make a bit of an effort, you might feel a bit better, then feel like making more of an effort etc.

    Work with what you have.

For instance, there's a James Bond season on over here at the moment, one film a week on a Wednesday night. Being films predominantly from the early 80's, and being Bond films, they're full of bikini-clad girls and swimmingshort-clad men, and I'll tell you this - there are dimpled thighs, rounded bellies, imprefections abouding among the film extras. In this day and age that wouldn't be allowed - the extras would be toned and bronzed serial body-brushers who spend two thirds of their wages on beauty treatments and the rest saving for yet MORE plastic surgery. It's unrealistic and it's unhealthy.

/me goes off to have a ferrero rocher and another cup of cellulite-building coffee.

    :D

Beauty, eye of the beholder - it's all true, and doubly true if the person beholding is yourself.

If you're confident, it shines through. Confidence isn't the same as egotism, although it's often lumped in with it by those who lack it. Someone you wouldn't look at twice in a photograph can be the most beautiful person in the world when you've been speaking to them for 20 minutes.

Works the other way too. Beautiful people can seem hideous once you've been exposed to their personalities.

No amount of plastic surgery can make a boring, unpleasant person beautiful - and no amount of disfigurement can make a confident, funny, likeable person unattractive.

(And the trick is to apply that rule to yourself. Your face doesn't matter. Those rather outsize love handles don't matter. The person inside matters. Even people who think they've fallen in love with a body beautiful probably haven't; they've fallen in love with the person inside and their mind is telling them that the body is beautiful too. Ever looked really closely at that person who fills your nights with fevered dreams? Nose too large, eyes too close together or far apart, clumsy... Funny how you don't notice any of it unless you look for it, eh?)

I hate to hear anyone wittering on the way you are that they're ugly

Especially when they trollishly revel in it the way you seem to be

Stop splashing about in your self-pity pool and send a pic

Merc you're doing it again... assuming I'm getting at you when I'm not...

OK so don't post or send or fax or email a picture.

You're completely right, my opinion is probably useless to you. All that counts is your opinion, and in your opinion you're ugly.

In my opinion you're getting far too much enjoyment out of announcing that you're ugly, therefore I'm accusing you of indulging in a bout of self pity.

In my opinion, you're probably not ugly.

But hey, these are just our opinions.

And I'm not screaming at you, that would involve a bout of hysterical woman-ness that anyone who knows me knows that I just can't manage because it makes me laugh even if I try it.

    What poll???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,400 ✭✭✭TacT

the poll saying he's the ugliest duckling to ever have walked the planet and further proving he is in need to put other people down to make himself feel better by calling us idiots because we read his post, god! I wish I was as clever as this idiot

You are really really really hideous but you'll probably never get anyone's opinion because they'll never get close enough to you because your computer is the only thing you are capable of loving or otherwise caring for and sharing time with in what you have mistaken as your feelings because you have grown accustomed to your pc and lack the ability to interact with society on the whole.

    Good day to you sir.

ahh for godsake, who took pity on him in the poll?

I'm glad I kept this open.
I'm glad I voted the "no" option
I'm glad I fixed the poll to show a complete majority - hence abusing my moderatorship 'powers' (though I wouldn't have if the creator was not Unregistered and purely trolling)
I'm glad this is still open
But I think this should be closed.

    What do you think?
