I'm heading to Canada in October. Starting in Toronto as I have relatives there, then heading to West Coast for about 10 days taking in Vancouver, Vancouver Island, Calgary, Banff and the such. Planning on staying hostels and maybe doing some hiking, sight seeing and whatever else comes to mind.

Any suggestions of where to stay etc would be good. I have the usual, lonely planet guide, lots of stuff from the web, but you can never beat personal experience.

So any suggestions on accommodation, trips to take, places to go, things to do.. would be appreciated.

I'm heading over to Toronto Friday week for the month, haven't really got anything planned out properly but should be visiting St Johns, Montreal, taking a road trip down to New York and Niagara falls, and probably going to fly over to Vancouver for a couple of days, check out http://flytango.com/en/ for cheap air fares.

www.usitnow.ie have a good list of hostels and you can book them online, i'll try and post back here after my holiday and let you know of any cool places to visit!

6 years ago i spent 3 months canada, was staying with relatives on Vancouver Island.

i found the place very quite and relaxed. cant remember exactly where i was staying but there isnt a whole lot to do on vancouver island. i was only about 16 so its not like i had a car to drive around and go touring and all that. if you like wildlife there is loads of it around. in my aunts back garden we would regulary see eagles, deer, snakes, racoons and sometimes bears. her house was at the edge of a forest :)

i was there during the summer months and the mountains still had snow covering them. there was a ski slope not too far from where i was staying. but it was not high enough on the mountain to still have snow

also each year some sort of annual indian festival is held. the tribes all gather and perform dances and do other cool/weird stuff all dressed in the traditional clothing. you can buy some hand made indian crafts at the fair.

i would recommend hiring a car because there isnt much too do in any one place.
