Mods: Delete if need be - I'm unsure as to the legal nature of this, though most of the games on this site (it being as big as it is) seem to be there with permission, anda few are taken down due to the copyright bodyof designers stepping in or something.
    anwyay...

    http://www.theunderdogs.org

    www.bhlegend.com is also ok

For legal SNES roms go to www.cherryroms.com . The ISDA have taken down a few roms because some of the softco's objected, most games are still there though in all there semi-legal glory

Yeah classic trash is pretty good. I downloaded the classic "Syndicate Wars" there a while ago It's an excellent game and is the sequel to "Syndicate" which was first released on the Amiga I'd recommend it to anyone who likes gunning people down and blowing up cars, buildings:) etc.. [ala GTA3]

got swars myself a couple of weeks back, class game.
you gotta love the long overcoat & uzi combination

class game alright, couldn't get past the mission where the cult lads set of a mini nuke in a building killing some top compay geesers. frustrating but fun to watch the building collapsing.*

got xcom of that underdogs site as well before, another clasic.

is it just me or do other people think those games looked much better on the amiga. if slightly slower.

For all the abandonware resources you need : Including pretty much all of the above:

    www.tuol.org

    Enjoy.

I downloaded about 1000 games from these sites over the years.

It's part of a web ring Abandonweb and searches all the above sites in this thread and more for games but doesn't host any rom images itself as far as i'm aware. It is class all the same as you can usually find new abandon ware games very quickly BUT If your lookin for the real oldies your still goin to have to dig deeper to find them:)

bah, get the original syndicate, far better than that syndicate wars shite

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

yeah, i had weeks of fun on the original syndicate on snes, must download a rom (it'd look half decent in snes9x with opengl bump mapping turned on)

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 2,975 Mod ✭✭✭✭LoGiE

I think the Amiga and PC Versions looked a little different to the snes version, wasn't the snes version kinda cartoony with large sprites etc?
On the amiga version the agents where tiny...I'll have to check this one out

[Edit] Holy crap there's a huge difference!
    sydicate.gif

tman if you liked the snes version you should give the amiga version a try won't you be suprised with the change in graphics!:D

    OpenGL Bumpmapping you say......sure..............

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,576 ✭✭✭Kairo

Uh..which emulator would that be tman? :p

What masochist would play Syndicate on a Snes anyway? Amiga version clearly pawns...including Syndicate Wars.

    Now where's me Persuadatron...:)

For those who haven't got a clue what going on....
    syndicateAmiga.jpg

The original and best Amiga version:) just loads a blood and carnage without the cartoon feel and the Aluminous hair:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭DiscoStu

syndicate wars was much better than the original. if only it would work on xp. even vdms has trouble with it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

ugh, id forgotten how crappy the snes version looked, dont think i'll bother downloading a rom, just get an abandonware version instead...
    OpenGL Bumpmapping you say......sure..............
    indeed i do!
    snes9x.jpg
it makes most games i've tried look way nicer, less of that pixelation crap

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

I think that is just taking the piss, bumpmapping is taking a texture map (from a 3d object) and applying a texture (the bumpmap) on top of it to give it a bumpy look, it makes the texture look 3d because as the angle changes, the bumpmap changes to give the impression of shadow being bounced around the place on the texture. This feature is shown in 3dmark benchmark and in DoomIII, NOT in a 2d snes game.

it makes the games look nicer, that's all that matters to me.
whoever coded snes9x must've been drugged up or something:rolleyes:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭DiscoStu

each frame is taken as a texture and is bi-linearly(is that a word?) filtered. the bump map is then applied onto the texture. since the angle of the 2d image never changes as you have so rightly pointed out somthing else has to to be done. a light souce is applied to the texture which moves around in a circular motion. this movemt causes the illusion of a 3d surface. however it causes a noticable performance hit, causes the image to be a lot darker and in my opinion looks like a pile off poo. it has also been taken out of the newest version but the programmers forgot to take it out of the gui.

Yes I know i've brought this thread back from the dead;) but I was just browsing around The Underdogs and ended up downloading these classics! Battlecruiser3000ad (A must for anyone that loves elite) and Masters Of Orion which is a classic i'd forgotin all about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,277 ✭✭✭DiscoStu

careful it will not even install on xp. the amount of time i spent extracting it from the install package and using vdms to get it running was waste. battle cruiser millenium also sucked. you couldnt even change the mappings of the axis on your joypad. that one went straight back to the shop.

didnt know they had moo there. might check that one out. the mac version is better though.
