About out there got an eMac - I'm considering buying one as my first ever Mac - seems like a nice entry level price. I'm very nervous about buying a Mac over a PC - a 1500 euro leap of faith !

Also wondering about Apple Works - can you read MS Word and Excel files ok with this, or will I need to buy MS Office for Mac also

Hmmmm, as for the leap of faith - go for it. It is a beautiful experience to own a Mac. Don't know much about the eMac though.

As for Appleworks - it is a good program - all the similarities of office but... no you can't cross the beams! You can create appleworks documents and add the extension to make it a word document that opens for me on my mac office. It doesn't seem to want to open xl or word documents though. Sorry, I'm a bit disappointed about that actually, I thought it would have been the other way round.

I never use appleworks though as I have Office, I never did use appleworks it just didnt sit right with me for some reason.

Let us know when you get it matey, keep tabs here for your queries etc...

From what I've heard, the eMac is supposed to be very noisy... (The fan) Kinda strange when you consider that a lot the product line is fanless.

thanks for the info - the Apple website claims that Apple Works can 'send and receive' excel and word docs, but no mention of specific support.

had a good read around the user support forums on the site also and the eMac seems to suffer from screen quality - lots of reports of flickery screens, and the fan noise that you mentioned.

I think I'll wait for a few more replies then decide if I'm going for it. thanks again.

Hmmm, let me check tonight if I can import an excel or word file then... maybe it is possible.

Get an iMac mate, with a cd burner etc

i agree get an imac if you have to buy macinthrash, cos the eMac is very dear for what it is and is aimed at the education market whereas a similar iMac with cd burner is a lot cheaper

Thanks guys. the Appleworks excel/word claim appears at www.apple.com/appleworks - though it says you need v.6.2.4. Let me know how you get on ...

would love an iMac, but they start at E1934.79, whereas the eMac starts at E1,450.79. emac seems to be a poor mans iMac. ie without the flatscreen.

Unlike pcs, from what I can see none of the Apple resellers go below the Apple advertised price or have i missed something. E1500 is my budget.
