Check out the insurance. You may get a shock and will be easier to buy 911. I went through this before and dropped the Cobra project. It is much easier to build kit car based on Fierro/Vw/Mr2 where chassis remains intact.

Insurance on a kit car would be roughly the same as any other car.
1.If you build a kit car and put a 1.0 litre engine it is taxed AND insured as a 1.0 l.A friend of mine built a replica using an old Ford fiesta engine, gearbox, etc.

2.You can not register a kit car here in Ireland. You have to bring it to the UK using a UK address and register and tax it there for at least 6 months. It has to get a Full MOT and be tested for roadworthiness. And is also put through a stringent safety test.

3.Then you can bring it back to Ireland as an english imported car wherby you have to pay VRT etc.

This is the one and only way of owning a kit car here in Ireland. Its a stupid system but if you can do it you can drive an excellent looker of a car for a dirt cheap price. The cars insurance and tax are based on the CHASSIS and ENGINE used to build the car and not whether its a 911 replica or such.

I built a Jago Jeep basically a WW11 Willies Replica, based on MK2 escort running gear.

It used the Escort reg, bascially it was a body kit and chassis replacement, was registered as a Jago Jeep, without any real problems.

Talk to the Vechicle registration office, they will let you know how to go about it these days. Hellrazer seems to have checked this out but I dont see why they wont register the car here. Persistence should get you sorted, they cant expect you to be dishonest, build the car here, pretend that you reside and use the car in the uk, and get an MOT, and a UK Q plate no doubt?...

There are plenty of UK kit manufacturers making cobra replicas, using everything from sierra/granaga running gear up to Jag/Rover running gear and engine to big block chevvy and ford v8s.

Couple of mags in easons about the UK Kit scene, well worth picking up a few copies to get a feel for it. But unless you are very mechanically minded, with lots of space and equipment and time, it is a really big job to take on.

The alternative is to buy second hand ready built (this would be the route I would take now), all the mags have lots of for sale adverts and there are a number of specialist dealers.

Keep an eye out for the V8 rover westfields, basically a lotus 7 replica, with a big engine or the DAX 4wd cosworth version. When I grow up I would like one of them.....

Do your research on insurance, that was my only problem, I ended up paying an insurance premium based on a 1.6 escort, but it took months to sort out. Might be easier now, when most insurance companies have a Uk office and some most likely offer this specialist insurance in the UK, so terms may be available here.

Keep us up to date if you do go ahead with the project.

Vexorg at the time we had already checked it out with the tax office over here and was told that they couldn`t register it here because of some out dated procedeure regarding the fact that the car was basically hand built and because at the time there was no rigid car testing policy in place(About 6 years ago).
It wasactually the tax office that tol us about the UK option.
And as it was it worked out ok in the end.

Well, you can modify existing model of the car, which is already registered here. Don’t touch the chassis and you will be safe . There is a limit what you can do and number of cars you can build. However, you can finish with e.g.
    -F40 build on Pontiac Fierro
    -F355 build on MR2
No structural chassis changes in both cars. Insurance goes by the logbook details.

If I remember there was only one company(actually broker) which would insure Cobra. Car was imported from UK as unfinished project and is not insurance friendly.

    and have look at https://www.hiberniandirect.ie/motor_fset.html

You quote is based on following assumptions:
    Your car is .....
Is not a car vanette, kit car, sports car, convertible, gti, Vtec. Is a right hand drive model and not converted, adapted or modified in any way

Please note that, although you may be excluded by the criteria set out above, alternative options may be available to you.

    This translates :
If you on this list, Please call us and we will clear all the money from your account.

Insurance is mega factor in this country.
