At last a football governing body does something wise and needed!

UEFA have decided to do away with the needless second group stage of the Champions League as of the 2003/04 season, no more or at least far fewer "none-games" where you really do need to be fan to bother watching.

Also the UEFA involvment with the pointless Confederations Cup
is ending, so maybe they do listen after all. Now if they could make all top leagues no larger than 18 clubs and....

    Mike.

yeah good to see that but its not Uefa who decide the top league thing only 2 top leagues have 20 England and Spain and thats by choice.
They have voted on it numerous times and still the smaller clubs win and it sstays 20 team.

All they need to do now is make the 'champions league' for champions.

Its better when it use to be just the champions of each country.

True. The whole format has been very shoddy for some time now. this should help somewhat.

It was a good decision to get rid of the second phase group stages. Interest really fades once ANOTHER six matches kicks in! And even speaking as a Liverpool fan it was a bit embarassing to get into the Quarter Finals with just one win in 6 matches!

They've done a very important, and a very needed thing. Now, they should take another courageous step- only allow the champions of the various leagues to enter. That is what the Champions League is meant to mean. Not the Champions-and-second, maybe third/fourth/fifth-depending-on-which-country-you-come-from-and-how-much-TV-money-it's-worth League.

That would ease schedules even more considerably- and give the fans the cream of the crop. No more watching Lokomotiv Moscow playing Fenerbache at a neutral ground- we want to see champions squaring off. Reality dictates that it will remain a super-elite group with proportionate representation from Spain/Italy/England/France/Portugal/Germany. But perhaps this latest move indicates a willingness to consider what fans want- unlikely, but there's always hope.
