most cheap dvd players support a wide range of vcd formats, thats basically why ppl buy them. try the minoka in power city (if they still sell them), blades been going on and on about how they play everything... though why anyone would want to buy a dvd player just to watch vcds is beyond me ;)

Ergh. Someone gave me a VCD once. The Quest I think it was called. I slapped it into the DVD player, and it was like a really badly compressed Mpeg. I think I'll stick to DVDs.

I don't think he ONLY wants it to play VCD's! Anyway that minoka maybe renamed to crown now, not sure what the story is but it's the cheap one thats in all their newspaper ads, you can see the picture of it then you'll know if it's the same one when you go in. I think it's 155 or 149 yo yo's now. Region free, macro off and mp3's inside folders, what more could you want! ;)

    Hi dathi1,

Your specific question was for SVCD not just VCD. Not all DVD players playback SVCD which has double the resolution of VCD and is encoded at mpeg2 not mpeg1. The results are quite reasonable especially if you are storing your own home movies and not prepared to pay out the large costs of the DVD recorders and their costly disks just yet.

I have successfully played SVCD on the Philips DVDQ50. Unfortunately, its playback of VCD is somewhat suspect and the firmware needs to be upgraded to at least 4.15i to overcome this problem.

    Good luck with the hunt.
