    1. It's an incentive to show up.

    2. It reduces stress.

    3. It leads to more honest communications.

    4. It reduces complaints about low pay.

    5. It cuts down on time off because you can work with a hangover.

    6. Employees tell management what they think, not what management wants to hear.

    7. It helps save on heating costs in the winter.

    8. It encourages carpooling.

    9. Increases job satisfaction because if you have a bad job you don't care.

    10. It eliminates vacations because people would rather come to work.

    11. It makes fellow employees look better.

    12. It makes the cafeteria food taste better.

    13. Bosses are more likely to hand out raises when they have had a couple of drinks

    14. Salary negotiations are a lot more profitable.

A Previous project I was on last year, everyone had to write up what went well, what didn't.

One of the main complaints was that we had to work late a lot so we didn't get to go out as much. So for the next project, every friday from 4am onwards there was free food+booze in work. biggrin.gif There was so much, I'd work the weekend and stock up my fridge with a bag full of left over drink. smile.gif

Why can't they have that in Ireland?

In a lot of German workplaces you can have a beer or wine in the workplace canteen

    Ireland is like Saudi Arabia

I think there's a glitch in the app that shows oldest posts first.
    It's funny though.

4am onwards? That's a bit extreme. Pubs aren't even allowed to open till 10:30 am

Since this thread clearly is a Trojan horse and the topic has not really aged we're leaving it open. Who knows OP might even pop back in again to see if their view has changed in the last two decades :P

I can't think of any good reason why we should have that here.

Can you imagine the disaster zone of an Irish workplace canteen with booze?

    Damn.

Apologies everyone. I'm not the only one for whom old threads are appearing.

We allow drinking in our workplace.

One of our programmers has a mini keg on his desk.

I've found it helps people enjoy their job, which means they care more.

Unfortunately Irish people often cannot behave like germans, French etc and have a glass with lunch or whatever

We'd have people stumbling all over the place and probably a solicitor's dream for business

We had drink in our last place in Ireland. Got bored pretty quickly of it.

Hope OP isnt a air traffic controller.

According to his post history he's the office manager at the Dublin Alcoholics Anonymous office.

Our London office has a complete help yourself bar with a high end spirits and craft beers on tap. Its certainly different pouring a glass of wine to compliment your lunch. Our Cork office has a few bottles of champagne but reserved for special events or big sales.

When I was working in Bavaria it was very common to see people with a large beer at lunchtime.

I never liked it though, even just the one would have me a bit hazy and effected my concentration.

    Heh, old school.

Ok, so you want serious answer or joking answer? The original post was just a joke that I didn't even write myself, sorry :)

The serious answer is that in my years of corporate employment, I only went for lunchtime beers one time when I was young and naive - it would have been about a year before this post actually... since then, I never had a beer at lunch and subsequently gone back to the office.

I hope that doesn't disappoint you all terribly :)

We better warn the Op about 9/11. (I think that's how it works).

Thinking about how I'd explain my prescience to US authories 18 months ahead of time... could be complicated. Now I need a beer.
