Teamtalk 252 is to stop broadcasting on Sky (And LW) in 4 weeks time.
Not many rich pickings for Sports fans on the Irish EPG now.

To be honest, I'm not surprised.
A high power longwave transmission-very expensive for a small audience-they must have been making huge losses.

Weren't they originally Atlantic 252?... The mast for their longwave relay is
very tall and near Enfield/Kilcock. If you've
ever travelled on the old Galway->Dublin
    road as you approach Enfield/Kilcock
environs by night or evening you would
probably see the flashing hazard lights on
their antenna. I remember the furore many
years ago when they got the planning
permission to put the antenna up.
It is in some farmers (or acquired farmer's)
    field.

I listened to their England v Argentina on LW
in the car a few weeks back and found their
commentary to be complete bilge. Sounded
like 3 biassed fans in a bar waffling and
    badmouthing about the ref.

as did i on the bus and you're right they were commentating from a pub in Leeds

I lisen to teamtalk 252 everyday and find them great for every sport. During the world cup the reason that their commentary was crap was because they they were commentating off the telly like what Ger Canning was doing for RTE but radio is more difficult,
My sister in California could'ent get any commentary on the internet for the Irish soccer matches because of FIFA restrications but Talksport went against FIFA with thier unoffical commentary which was better than notting.
    :D

When they stop broadcasting on Sky and Lw . Does they mean they are finished totally or will they still broadcast on med wave or FM in UK. For a station that had a strong tinge of Irish it is surprising they shud pull the plug. Is all this information reliable or just a fairytale?

It's a shame to see it go as it's the only sports channel I can receive loud and clear. I suppose it could never have been competition to the mighty (where available) Radio 5 Live or talkSport.

Slightly OT, I was poking thru the Sky brochure looking at the lists of channels and it listed talksport too. Strange methinks. Pity it is a lie

Aren't these guys on the air only about 6 months. Surely they could've stuck it out until the premiership etc begins in August. The only full season they have had is also the most quiet for a number of sports.

twas very handy for listening to the races at cheltenham early in the year

The pre-launch previews on LW were very promising, and the enthusiasm of the presenters seemed genuine.
But after a week of listening to the station proper, this initial hope proved to be unfounded. It was a very poor setup.

I have to say this is good news to me, that is if Atlantic comes back. Anyone know what the chances of that happening or what will replace teamtalk on 252 lw??

DavidHemsley Star Member, SudiosVille, certainly North of Watford! Posted 05-07-02 12:47\ TEAMtalk252 to close At a meeting today we were given an estimated time of between 4 and 8 weeks. No further plans were announced, ALL TEAMtalk252 staff will be losing their jobs, me included.

That's that then! :( I wonder what will happen the 252LW frequency now? Bring back the original Atlantic! :)

Woo! Yeah! I was gutted when I heard Atlantic 252 was going off the air to be replaced by another sports talk station (as if turning Talk Radio into TalkSport wasn't bad enough!), so hopefully they'll be back (though I doubt it).

If true and it seems it is, its a pity. True its no 5 Live but it had no rights and is new, James H Reeves will be missed my me at least...

The best use of the 252 kHz frequency would be to put RTÉ Radio 1 on it.

5 Live on 252 would be fantastic, I wonder if the owners of the mast would be interested in leasing it...? I'm sure the Beeb would'nt mind more listeners if the price was right.

3 words on the chances of 5 Live taking Teamtalk's frequency- "hell freezes over"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 880 ✭✭✭ifconfig

On the topic of hell freezing over ... i managed to find an article re-published from Irish Times concerning the transfer of ownership
of the mast and frequence for 252 from Atlantic -> TeamTalk.
In the article it is mentioned that one potential use of that frequency would be (God forbid) as an informational channel
in the event of a nuclear catastrophe.

Perhaps Joe Jacobs has a career for himself as a DJ .......
