How do you know the power supply is good? Try testing the machine with a different psu?

    Hi,

I wuz a product specialist for IBM, n this is 1 of the machines I supported. (It only had a 1 yr warranty from manufacturer. See if friend purchased extended warranty from reseller)

This is exactly what IBM would say you should do.

First remove any added (didnt ship with pc) hardware, eg graphics card, ram etc. Then try to boot.

    If that does not work

Remove 1 peripheral at a time. Start with the mouse. Try to boot.
If prob remains, remove the next.

If you are down to the tower unit and its still not booting, open case(see www.pc.ibm.com/support). Remove 1 component (eg hdd) at a time. try to boot each time.

When you are down to system board, etc, reseat the memory and processor. Also reseat the power connectors to the motherboard, with a different connector if possible, to eliminate the possibility of this being the problem.

If you do all this and the problem is not resolved, you'd be best to bring it to a shop.

When the shop rings IBM they'll be told to try a different Processor. Ram chip, power supply and motherboard. If the dont have the parts, they'll be advised to replace them 1 at a time. all parts have FRU no's, and can be ordered from the parts dept in Bolder Colerado if you can quote the fru.

i've done those things. whats bothering me is why the fan is spinning once and then stopping. its not the power supply or any peripherals or NEthing.

if this is a system board problem can it be fixed from my end (trying to have no cost on this one). i am a tech for and IBM only company and this one is baking my noodle.

cheers for the help so far tho, i do appriciate it.

I can't really remember but I think the IBM pcs have beep codes.

when the machine comes on it does a self check. if an error occurs the machine beeps x times.

check the ibm web site for a description of what each beep means.

Which Fan? psu or cpu? if it's the cpu fan, it's probably a loose wire r sumfink - buy a new one. If it's psu, buy a new psu.
