CD to MP3 and vice versa

I want to put some of my cd's onto my comp but in there original format they are just to big! Does anyone know of some free software that will allow me to change it over to .mp3. Also can I do this to back up my songs for some reason just about every last song on each cd doesnt work for me anymore!

i use http://www.cdex.n3.net/ for ripping from cd to mp3... really good quality and cddb support...
