Help me, I'm trying to install 7.3 atm and its driving me insane I've got all the partition stuff right its during the installation that I am getting problems. Well one problem, it stops, stops dead. I think it just decides to stop reading the CD and go back to bed. Any help would be appreciated.

ok relax for a second. A few more details would be nice. By 7.3 i presume mean Redhat. It could be a dodgy CD. so try copy the contents of it to your hard disk in windows and see what happens. if it fails/dies etc the cd is buggered.

if not post more details and ill try and help.

    Regards,

    Paul

Ya I can copy it. Umm Well I've a 2.4 gig partition and 256 swap partition. I can get as far as installing most of the files then I just stops and dies. I was looking over the trouble shooting and it mentions cd rom failing during installation but nothing other than that. Honesty I'm stumped because there is no obvious problem. My pc mets all the miniunm requirments and I'm not using the whole package just GNOME, and the development tools.

    Ya its redhat.

You are sure that you are not running out of HD space? I installed 7.3 the other day on a 5G partition and the full install seemed to go to about 2G5 though this was with KDE and Gnome and some db stuff. Of course I tend to use a 1K block size. I am not sure of the default block size used in RH but it could be 4096 (4K).

As a hardcore Slacker, I was very impressed with RH7.3. It is very userfriendly.

Yep, since it stops at various times during the installation usually when its transferring the installation image. Farthest I've gotten is to the second cd.

Sounds like it could either be a dodgy CD or a dodgy CD reader. First check if there is dirt or are fingerprints on the surface of the CD. Then, if possible check with another installation CD. (I've seen a similar problem on a Windows installation that actually turned out to be caused by poor cooling.)

Right I've managed so far to just install the terminal I've no GUI. How can install gnome from the CD's now? I can't do it by using the upgrading option so is there another way?

It is possible to install gnome from the cd, but if your in the console, this will be hard as there are many dependencies - the main one being X, the basic windowing system.

The initial install of RedHat should have an option to install X and gnome, etc. You might consider starting a fresh installation.

What was the cause of the earlier problem? Was it dirt on the CD?

Finally, it is possible you did install gnome and X already but selected a non graphical login. Type 'startx' to check.

The cause I think comes down to a crap installer.

I've installed, what I have by doing a custom install and picking none of the packages available, including the X windows system. I'll try once again but incase it fails once again how can I install the X system from the terminal?

I think you've got a damaged CD and you are getting around the problem areas by doing a minimum install. If this is the case, then you won't be able to do a manual install of the required packages from the console. Did you try copying the contents of the CD to the hard disk just to check it's integrity?

im pretty sure apt-get (or apt-cdrom) should sort you out here..

    try:

    apt-cdrom
to add the cdrom to apts source lists then
    apt-get install gnome

    or something along those lines.

Gav chuckles at kali. Get back to your stinking debian machine ken !

GreenHell, had the exact same problems as you with redhat 6.2 Dodgy cd's/cdrom drive. Get new cd's, and/or try and different cdrom.

installing X from console isn't too bad.
just log in, mount the cd rom

    $ mount /mnt/cdrom

then go through the folder till you find the rpm's.
You can use rpm -Uvh to install the rpm's required. Look for ones with xfree86 in the title. install them as above. They will tell you what other packages you need to have installed.

it's a bit long and wearying, but doable.
