    Can anyone help...

I'm thinking about buying an MP3 player from a user on ebay for €175. I rang customs to see if it was shipped as a gift would I be liable for VAT ect but they were very vauge  .

If the person selling it to me marks it as a gift (for me) am I still liable for any customs charges ?

Also does anyone know if the battery charger for an American Creative Dap Jukebox work on 220V here ??

    Thanks all....

Generally anything marked as gifts, samples for export, educational books or anything with a declared value under about $50 is not liable for import duty.

Normally, you have a good chance of it getting through without paying import duty unless it is quite substantial.

If you are nervous about it just get the sender to mark the value as $50, that way it is under your import quota and you wont be charged for it - The drawback to this is if it gets lost/stolen etc.. they will only pay you out the declared value as insurance (if it is insured)

btw, Im only guessing the $50 quota - Cant remember what the exact figure is. I was told two or three different figures by customs before.

have your stuff in a sealled clear bag marked sample, say you work in a internet cafe and bang the electronics is brought over without hassle

thanks for all the advice so far folks. Customs metioned if the gift was worth less than €45 I wouldn't be liable for any charges..
So I presume if the guy marks the goods down as worth $40 I shoud be ok ?

Any other info would be appriciated. Thanks.

put the device in a bag and write "class A product" on it and tell the custom officers that its a return item and was given as a sample from the company
