Setting up ADSL on PPPoA in Linux

Okay, so i was thinking of converting my XP Router to Linux,

What distro of linux would be the best for getting my adsl connection working?

I've tried MDK 8.2 with no success - apparently mdk's script was messed up in 8.2 and now adsl connections dont work... I require X to work in some way, so that i can still use my router occasionally for things when my workstation is doing other things.

The later versions of SuSE (>=7.2) should work out of the box. Alternatively, download Roaring Penguin PPPOE which should work on any distribution.

Who is supplying the ATM? Is this the 'enhanced' version of Eircom's ADSL? Just out of interest.

For a slightly different (and possibly easier) solution, you could use an Ethernet modem with PPPoA -> PPTP relay (most support it) and just use a PPTP client from sourceforge.net.

Of course, you probably already have a USB modem, so that may not be much use to you ;)

According to his profile, he lives in the UK, - BT use PPPoA as standard there, so maybe he's using their DSL service

he does indeed live in the UK and as hudson said thats the standard BT have set for adsl over there.

have a squiz here for more info on pptp and the use of a client.

    http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/documentation.phtml

there is a driver for Speed Touch USB adsl modem. have a look for it if thats the one you are using noog :)

    Paul
