A friend 's digibox changes channel very slowly.
I noted that the EPG software version on their box is 2.8b, while on mine it's 2.8b*, I tried doing a forced upgrade twice, but this didn't have any effect on upgrading the EPG version.
    any suggestions???

Looks more like the digibox needs more RAM> Software isnt going to help I guess.
Is it a grundig or amstrad? Theyre horribly slow.
    Design failure.

This is a good site for digibox problems - don't know if there is an answer if a forced download doesn't work though.

shinobi as far as i know any software version in a sky digibox with an * after it means that the digibox is a second generation box which has a faster processor and generaly all round better proformance.

If the box does not have the * it is a first generation box and so will be slower.

I could be making all this up but who knows.;)

The digibox they have is a pace, as do I, but when you look up system details theirs is a version 2 box, where as mine is a version 1 box.

Oh but you are right! 2.b* is only for 2nd gen boxes. The older boxes only have 2.8 without *. If box had been able to cope with other software, it woulda updated with the forced download. What model is the Pace box? Is it the old 2200?

    Have a look at:-

    http://www.satcomm20.co.uk/index.htm

In the left hand column about threequarters of the way down you will find Sky Digibox hints and tips and this tells you how to update your software:-

    Sky digibox download procedure:

The latest software for the Sky digibox is always available for download 'over the air' (i.e. via satellite). We recommend that you carry out a download each time you install a new digibox. However, you can also instigate a download any time you want to upgrade a digibox with the latest software version. and with any Sky box the procedure to be followed is the same:

Disconnect the digibox form the mains.
Make sure that the digibox is connected to a suitable satellite dish and that the dish is aligned to the Astra 2a satellite at 28.2 degrees East.
Make sure that the digibox is connected to the TV set by a Scart lead.
Press and hold the back up button on the front panel of the digibox.
Still keeping the back up button pressed, reconnect the digibox to the mains.
Keep the back up button pressed for about 30 to 40 seconds, i.e. until the message (Updated system software) is displayed on the television screen.
Release the back up button. The downloaded will take approximately 10 minutes. On completion, the receiver will go into standby.
Leave the digibox for further minute.
Press the standby button on the front panel of the receiver, or the standby button on the Sky remote control, to bring the digibox out of standby.
The procedure is now complete and the digibox can be operated in the normal way.

There's a load of other excellent stuff on this site - well worth a read!

Did all that, both with the card out and with it in.
Strangly enough when I tried doing the download with the card out I lost all the sky channels & it would only list all the FTA channels, so i re-did it with the card in and got the channels back.
BTW this is a replacement box from sky as the last one was faulty.

    take the card out
    do the forced download
when its finished, put the card back in other wise you wont see any of the sky channels

I guess you are no longer under warranty - and Sky will charge a fortune once the first year is up if you call them out! In view of probs you might talk to them about upgrading if they want you to continue subscribing - do they do upgrade at an advantageous price where reissued box is nbg I wonder? Probably not!
You could always ask Martin at Satcure (see earlier post) with this one - he is a good techie and does not charge for an opinion.
    I'm out of ideas!
