I have a Compac Ipac with the microsoft OS. I am looking for a pda and phone combined. I know they are out there somewhere but not in Ireland. Can anyone give some info on when we might see these devices in Ireland?

Hi Robert, as you are already a MS PDA (PocketPC) user then the main option available to you is the O2 XDA. I'll leave off the Palm devices unless you are interested? The XDA is already released in other O2 territories, and supposed to be due for launch in Ireland in July.

No exact date / price for Ireland available at the moment. Other territories price plans differ but for reference: In Germany it's EUR 649 with a 24 month contact + monthly contract charges. In The Netherlands it ranges between EUR 719 and EUR 499depending on which 12 month contract is chosen + monthly contract charges.

Here are details on the device:

An alternative is choosing a PocketPC with Bluetooth. You can then wirelessly connect online via Bluetooth to a Mobile Handset that also has Bluetooth.

Currently, the only PocketPC device on the street with integrated Bluetooth is the iPAQ 3870 (with the new 3970 due shortly). At the moment the only supported mobile with Bluetooth is the Nokia 6310. But, that doesn't mean the operator will support the Bluetooth part... I'm having some stability issues with the current software version on the Nokia 6310 (v4.20) doing GPRS over Bluetooth connections.

I'm having an OK time Bluetoothing between an iPAQ 3870 with an Ericsson on O2 and a Nokia on Vodafone. The flexibility of having two separate devices is better for me. One reason is there are some places I would only use a phone not a a Phone/PDA combo: in the pub, on the street, if it's raining. Another is I'm not running down the PDA battery with a GPRS connection or doing voice calls, the phone batter handles that.

    HTH,
    Brian G
