The Forum on Broadcasting starts today, and I'm looking forward to what it brings.

I didn't get time to work on a proposal with anyone, so sorry to those who were willing to help, but if today's events are anything to go by, it should be interesting....

    From RTÉ News.....

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2002/0626/broadcasting.html

"The Broadcasting Commission of Ireland has told a public session of the Forum on Broadcasting that it believes it should become the single content regulator for broadcasting here.

The BCI currently regulates the independent sector.

Michael O'Keeffe of the Commission said he believed the setting of the TV licence should remain a function of government.

Eoin Ronayne of the NUJ said the BCI had proved itself to be a light touch regulator and did not have the teeth to become a single regulator."

    Lovely, differing views :D

Damien - its the one and only public session today - the Forum has already met in private several times and will now draw up its report.

It was all live on Radio 1MW (except when the football was on) - I tuned in for the last hour or so and caught Mark Deering's contribution (said Sky Active would launch by end of year).

You can see the short version tonight on RTE1 at 11:35pm.

There was a broadcasting forum in Dublin today whose remit was to discuss and share views on Irish broadcasting for the future.

    Was anyone there?

I listened in for a while today, but most of what I picked up had to do with commercial broadcasting, notably Satellite (so you can find my comments here).

One of the public participants was active in a community broadcasting industry association, and she noted she had never been invited, and only heard about it at the last minute on the radio. She was naturally angry at this oversight.

Did the ICDG get an invite, perchance?

Alas no, I didn't get to make a submission. In fact, I only heard about it on the Last Word last night when Bob Collins and James Morris (TV3 chairman, though his company Windmill Lane now owns less than 10% of it, CanWest Granada Media Holdings Limited holding the other 90%).

Everyone who made a submission was invited.

Rick Herrington, the Canadian MD of TV3, was apparently very vocal today, but oddly was attacking Sky rather than RTE today.

Only saw the highlights on RTE yesterday.

Was nice to see one of the people from Film Makers Ireland give out to TV3 for lack of Irish Independent Programming and weather TV3 were ready to make Irish Programming outside their quoat and weather or not if there was no quoat on TV3 for Irish output would they be bothered.

Was a Sky Rep at the Meeting yesterday?

Also one of the seakers made the point that cheap programming for irish tv is not the way to go and quoated TG4 as being in those realms of cheap unactractive TV viewing (not their words), I wounder if TG4 was in English if they would attract viewers. I think the answer to that would be yes and they proved that by showing their innovative and cheap programming at the meeting yesterday.
