I'm thinking about buying a polaroid camera mostly to take photos for research work and for reference purposes. I don't really know anything about them though. Are they expensive?

The regular polaroids? Not the digital ones?

Cameras are fairly cheap really. The bigger cost is the cost of the film, which is very expensive, relatively speaking.

The big convenience of polaroid cameras (the instant picture) has been matched (at least) by digital cameras so you may want to consider getting a cheap digital camera instead.

I have one of the (brick-like) Fuji Instax (I think that's what it's called).
Apart from the bulk it's a very handy job, picture quality is probably fine for what you want.
Cost of the camera was about £100 (in old money) if memory serves.
Cost per pic is expensive though, last time I bought film it was £10 (again in old money) for a 10 shot pack.

I have not used it in a while because, to be honest, it's a little bit awkward to be dragging around.
I might buy the Polaroid model that Leonard had in Memento, very handy fold-up job.
